Safe in School

I see that some other people have brought up some good points about the recent school shooting epidemic. I agree that it is a major problem. How can we even feel safe in our schools anymore. School shootings are happening everywhere and it seems to get worse every day. You could go to school and get caught in the crossfire. Getting killed by a bullet that wasn't even meant for me is not an option for me.

The college that I plan to go to in the fall got closed down for a few days a couple of weeks ago due to threats. My boyfriend's college also got closed down for two days because of similar threats. Where were the security guards when these threats were made? I mean I understand if the threat was over the phone then there wouldn't be much the security guards could have done except for have the police track the call. If someone issued a verbal threat within school grounds or wrote it on a wall and was caught by the security guard or someone else, were they arrested? A threat like that is a good reason for someone to be arrested, even if the person was kidding about it, it shouldn't matter. This is not a laughing matter. South Suburban College and DeVry University don't even have metal detectors and I'm sure that most other schools don't have them either. How are supposed to be safe?

I am literally scared to go to college in the fall. I understand that the chance of me getting gunned down in school is probably a slim chance but it shouldn't even be a thought in my head. I also bet that most of those other people that got killed in school shootings never thought it would happen to them either, but now look at them. They're six feet under now with no futures. Their lives were stripped from them by someone who needed help but didn't get it.

Why didn't the shooters get counseling before they decided to go on a killing spree? Why wouldn't the people who bullied them and made their lives hell, stop and think about what they were doing and what the consequences might be if the person decided to snap one day?

I want to be excited about college, not scared. College is supposed to be a great experience, not a death trap. I understand that I probably have more chances of running my car off the road and hitting a tree than I do getting shot in a school shooting but the numbers are rising every day and eventually it will become like a war. I mean seriously, what will it be like ten years from now if it's like this now? Pretty soon we'll all have to wear bullet proof vests to school.

Anyone who doesn't see this as a big issue probably hasn't had it hit home yet but sadly eventually it probably will. Then they'll realize where everybody else was coming from.

So, stop the bullies to stop the shootings. It'll save lives.

Metal detectors in college isn't exactly efficient. In a school with 20,000 students, it would take hours to check everyone in between classes. I've taken classes with 450 people in them, and 4 classrooms the same size in the same building. Requiring 1800 people to empty their backpacks, etc. just to enter the building is hardly efficient.

As for the security guards, how many security guards should a school have? In order to monitor every threat you mentioned, you would need guards in bathrooms, dorms, classrooms, everywhere. If you think tuition is high now, just wait until you add about 10,000 more security guards to a campus. Ouch.

Allow people with concealed carry permits to carry in a school.

1.) This is the teachers and some staff if they have a ccw. No students, in any state, can get a ccw permit due to their age. (In College, it'd just be some adult students and some select seniors that could qualify)

2.) Those who would shoot up a school, as we can see, do not care about 'Weapon Free Environment" stickers. Therefore, the only ones who are disarmed by such a sticker are the good guys. They're the ones, in an emergency, that you WANT armed.
