is it really a growing trend?

When you look through all the news and statistics out there, it seems everything bad is on the rise in our society. Child abuse, rapes, murders, gangs, unemployment, eveything is on the rise.
What is it about our society that is breeding this? And are these things really worse that they have ever been?
There is no doubt that our current society has a sufeit of problems. But look back across history. Look back to the real worst time in human history: the dark ages. Here was a time in history everything went wrong. Murder, mayhem, and death were rampant. We have a good idea of how bad things were. Societies were crumbling as the black death consumed victim after victim. We will never know the true statistics of this time because unlike now they didnt keep stats on every aspect of life.
I remember a comment my mother made to me once when I asked why I couldnt go wander the neighborhood with my friends. "You always tell me about how you used to when you were young" I argued at her. Her responce, "times were differnt back then. It was just safer to go out." Was what she said really true? Personally I dont thing so. Every boogyman we fear now, they existed then too. They have always existed. I think our society is simply more aware of them. Back then every theft, rape, and murder wasnt splashed across five news stations.
Perhaps its are awareness of right and wrong which sets us apart. We not longer believe tha human sacrifice is an honor. We no longer believe that scalping our opponents is a sign of power.
So is our society truley the worst? Theres no doubt we're bad but remember, mankind has had a long history of violence that has no likelyhood of letting up.

Agreed. Things are actually FAR better now than they've been for much of the past.

That true, but to an extent. Its hard, i know mankind has the potential for so much more. With the technological and moral advances we've make, we should be futher along than we are.
