Upon joining Progressiveu, I have found myself writing more. I know my standing in the scholarship contest is rather low, but nevertheless I enjoy writing enough to continue. The entries I have been seeing are typically thought-provoked and well-written. The most enjoyable ones are well organized, well argued and, well-- interesting. I am glad to be participating alongside such thoughtful contestants, but it has become aggravating to me and perhaps to other participants when the only feedback we receive are advertisements.
Personally, I am tired of getting the comments along the lines of “Nice. Now go read mine at…” As a contributor, I had hoped that the comments would help me improve my writing style and provide other points of view on a topic. I thought comments should be thought out and beneficial. They should offer insight for improvements. For arguments, the beneficial comments critique the overall structure. They point out the strengths and the weaknesses of the argument. Many of our posts are arguments. We might not be in a mood or in a position of arguing, but many of us are stating an opinion or a wandering thought. Why do you think this way? What made you think of this? How does it connect with something else?
I spent a couple weeks writing on of my entries, partially because of the research I used and a time juggle. I received three comments. One was complimenting. I will not lie—I am human. It is nice to get a compliment every once in awhile. The other two, however, were the same comment, advertising some else’s blog with no connection to mine. I do enjoy reading other posts. I know I am fortunate to be included in a site where there are various points of view and backgrounds for a single topic. However I am frustrated to see that some posts of my own and of others are simply catalogs for people’s blogs.
Conversely, writers should expect helpful criticism. Of course, it is annoying to get the “u r stupid, u suck” comments, but it is useful to receive something that can respect your thought process (there should be one though) and make you learn. Sometimes it is hard not to respond to immature and/or rude comments that only use a hard-worked post as a billboard or bash forum.
I would recommend, and perhaps other writers would agree, that if readers leave comments, they should be (or try to be, I know at times it can be hard) respectful of the opinion and of the work. As a writer, understand that your writing will be read by many people who will criticize your writing. It can be hard not to take it too personally. Some comments are not respectful, some posts are not respectful. I do not expect that everyone will agree with everything I am writing about, but respect my work and I will respect yours.

You can always flag questionable comments (use the Flag this link, put in the URL and directions as to what are flagging and why) for one of us moderators to look at and remove if warranted.

What Fallon said.
I'm sorry you are not receiving a great deal of attention to your blog, but it sometimes takes a while for users to get noticed among those of us that are on the site often. Just keep commenting on other's blogs, and eventually you'll get the traffic you want. One of the blogs I wrote for the last contest just got really popular in the past couple days...

Why are you sorry? It makes sense to me. The people who post only to advertise should not, in my opinion, be receiving comment points.
I don't mind not having so much attention, but i would like the attention that I do receive to be a little more considerate.
Don't worry about that, the moderators are taking care of it, promise :-). As Fallon said, the flag button is great for reporting this sort of thing.
I just wanted to make sure that you weren't going to give up because you didn't receive a lot of attention for so much effort.

Sorry I misunderstood you! My apologies. I was confused.
Thank you. I do not plan to, I have come to love writing more.
Best wishes =)
It's O.K. In the beginning I wrote vigorously and yet the guy who wrote "FUCK GOD" as his title recieved three times the amount of hits and twelve times the comments as I did (I won't lie, my blogs were pretty good) I read his piece- it was terrible. Riddled with mistakes, both spelling and grammatical, and his argument was even less impressive. Yet people latched onto it like there was no tomorrow and they had to get their word out among the thousands that already wrote something. Your blogs might have substance, but humans as a whole are attracted to the things that are the shiniest. Hint: Use a really controversial title, then lure them in to actually read something substantial. It's the only way. Either that or be happy that there is an intelligent enough crowd to appreciate your higher sense of understanding, no matter how small it is.

Hate to admit it, but most of the time you're right about the importance of blog titles.
Sucks, some of my best blogs go unread while something I posted as a joke with some outrageous title and accusations received god knows how many comments and went off into a totally different vibe.
Exactly. I was trying to read a post written by someone who. kept. putting periods; & other: oddball punctuation in. and they makes so many grammatical errors, it was quite confusing!
Titles are extremely important. There are so many posts to read, so the ones with the catchy titles are the most read and most commented. My post on abortion got quite a few reads right after posting, this one is taking awhile, while one on the lincoln memorial is dead. We can't really say don't judge a book by its cover. We just have to design the best cover.
I just read one of your blogs. I commented on that one (without ads of course) and I will try read another soon. Good job & keep up the good work.
I remember that blog; I avoided it like the plague. What really irritated me was the fact that when the popularity of that blog finally started to wind down, the writer took it upon himself to write a new blog with a title that was something along the lines of "No one was able to refute my "Fuck God" Blog".
I, personally, don't pay attention to the titles with swear words or ignorance spewing from them. Many times, I won't even look at the "Recently Posted" list. Instead, I have begun to only find blogs by picking a person on my Buddy List and using the "Track" feature to "stalk" him or her. I figure, the people on my Buddy List are there for a reason... So I can usually trust that they've found a good post for it to warrant their attention.
By the way, it's nice to see you back on the site Cadet :) It's been a while since I've seen anything from you...

I do that some too because there aren't always really interesting posts on the recent list. But, now that I'm a mod, I've been trying to read and comment or rate the recent blog posts more as well. I've found some pretty good ones lately!

Oh geez...I remember the "No one was able to refute my Fuck God" blog. You could literally tell the difference between the users who took this site seriously and the ones who did it just for the point factor.
The "shiniest" blogs have caught my attention (I'm human too :P), unfortuantely. There has to be a better way of deleting posts like that. No one wants to be reminded of how much stupidity gets onto the internet; its sad. And this site shouldn't be included as a hang out for people who have nothing better to do than write for the sake of points. (As a matter of fact...thats why I left for an entire year in the first place)

Very well organized! I could tell that you put alot of thought into this and wanted it to come out just right. =) That's good.
Don't fret people who write demeaning comments, don't take it personally. They're inconsiderate and mean and you don't need anything from them anyway. :) So keep on doing what you do! You're great!

i totally agree.
i only write comments when i actually have something to say, and when i do i put some thought into it.
i can say this about yours, your writing style is really organized, it's one of the reasons it's so great.
