I think this will be my last words on bullying because I have worn out the topic and also I can’t think of another kind of bullying at the moment. I have so far covered gossiping, physical harassment, and now I bring up the third and last type internet bullying. This is the newest and biggest growing concerns for schools that have had problems with it before because there is so much controversy over it. People will pick on someone at school say in person but when they go home sometimes if the school gets on a website like myspace because that seems to be the most permanent site but there are constantly changing sites like meebo which is more or less a different version of aim or instant messaging. However, sometimes there is the problem that people will get on it for the sole reason of harassing someone that may be considered a loser or someone they may just be mad at for whatever reason. The problem with this is that it doesn’t just go on inside school and if the school tries to stop it they often fail. If they block the site at school that can’t stop people from using it at home and as soon as the school blocks it another site just like it seems to pop up. Myspace is not the place to do this any more because I think they have strict clauses against it now that will get the person responsible for rude messages/comments band from the site or shut down. However, if the school tries to take action against the student often it becomes the case that it happened off school grounds so what right does the school have.
What can we really do about it? There is no stopping people that use the internet or so it would seem. Schools don’t have jurisdiction outside of school grounds. Should parents be more involved in it? What do you think? What are your opinions or ideas on how to stop this because bullying needs to be ended? No more lives should be taken or ruined because of bullying. Yes I say lives because how do you think Virginia tech came about or columbine. We are always caught up in the aftermath of it saying we didn’t see any signs until it was too late. Is there also something we can do to see the signs earlier? Should there be a mandatory talk with the guidance counselor once every two weeks or so or maybe every month? Should teachers try to be closer with their students because we use that method in my school? I say this because not too long ago a student snapped and brought a gun to my school. However, because my school is rather small and everyone knows their teachers and other faculty so closely because we spend our entire high school experience with the same teachers the student was caught before he even got to their locker. That is the reason we do not use metal detectors except for the occasional wand every now and again which is only done at random.
