At our evening church service yesterday, we watched a video about truth, different religions, and tolerance. One of the speakers on the video had a quote that I will try to copy here, but which I will probably get wrong: "Tolerance in and of itself is saying you disagree with someone. How do you tolerate something you agree with?" To paraphrase, if it lines up with your own beliefs, you're not being tolerant; you're just showing how well you get along with people who are like you.
So what's your take on tolerance? Does it mean being open and willing to see everyone's point of view? Does it mean not holding any strong beliefs of your own? Does it mean that you can disagree with other people and still be civil, even kind, to them?
And does believing that others' religions or beliefs are wrong make me intolerant if I continue to treat them well despite differeing views?

oucH! this one is a REAL mind boggler! great post!
my take.. tolerance is a word that resembles or personifies equality or chance. does that make sense? it's not that context of the word that should be taken literally, well that is my view. but in the back of my head im saying it should. uhmm... woah, this is such a good question that i gotta ask my english teacher! uhmmm... TOLERANCE.... all that comes to mind is being open to everything regardless of your beliefs which does make you intolerant of those different views from your own. oh never mind, this is self-defeating on my part.
ambiguity at it's finest.
GOOD POST! I LOVE THIS SITE!!!!
I believe that to be able to tolerate something, you must be open-minded. For example, I am tolerant of homosexuality. I do not personally agree with it based on my Christianity, but I will tolerate it. I know that it is something that will always be present in society, so instead of trying to fight a losing battle, I will sit back and tolerate it. I have my own strong beliefs, but I can also see where they are coming from.
I do not tolerate homosexuality in that I do not agree with that in any way. I do not tolerate drug abuse because I refuse to take part in it and think it is wrong. However, because I care about people that are gay or drug-users, I do tolerate the people themselves. You can be intolerant of something someone does and not be intolerant of the person themself.

or maybe tolerance vs. acceptance?
If we as a whole are unable to tolerate, what makes us any different from a sheet-wearing Klansman?
That's my belief on that.
