After being in school for ages, I've noticed something. Well, I've noticed it since about my senior year in high school. After you learn something, you suddenly see it everywhere. Allow me to explain.
My senior year of high school, we took modern world history. Everything from World War I and on. So we studied the Russian Revolution, and with some depth. We learned all about the theory of the proletariat and the bourgeoisie. Almost immediately after we learned this, I started seeing references to these terms everywhere. I think one of them was even in some song I had been listening to for some time.
It continues in college. I learned that exercise can help treat diabetes through specific mechanisms. All of a sudden, my news feeds had stories about exercise helping diabetics. The most recent instance happened with this site, though.
I'm taking History of the Ancient World this semester, for my minor in history. Just these past two weeks, I have learned all about the Epic of Gilgamesh and several other stories that align with the Bible. Our professor is a bit... out there, so he keeps telling us that we'll come to talk about more specifics later in the class, so I was planning on writing a blog about it in the near future. But today I get on and start reading blogs, and TWO mentioned Gilgamesh. I hadn't ever heard of him before I took this class, but suddenly, he's appearing in places I never dreamed of reading about him.
Just an interesting tidbit I wanted to share. Anyone have any similar experiences?

It happens with books all the time for me, as weird as that sounds. I'll pick up one book and one of the themes or big parts of the story will have to do with sexual abuse or a psychopathic killer or some such and then the next books I buy all have a very similar theme to that first one. it's not something that's obvious when I first picked them up.
I think it has to do with one paying attention after that first experience. We don't notice the references before we study them, but afterward, we have that point of reference to refer the new instances too. At leas, that's my theory!

My first Psychology proffesor warned us about things like this and promised that none of us were crazy and that knowledge has away of doing that to peoples minds. Then he paused looked around and corrected himself saying that most of us were not crazy, few of us may be and did the House face twitch. We laughed and be the end of the semester we all knew what our problems were. Maybe that is why the bible talks about the fall of man and knowledge (like it would really kill us and rob us of our innocence)

Yes, the fall is a very interesting concept. You can live forever and be completely innocent, or you can die and be knowledgeable. Ender's Shadow is very much like that... very interesting theory. :-)
I suppose it's sort of like the medical student syndrome as well... you learn about a disease, and suddenly think that you, or someone around you, is displaying symptoms of the disease. Much like hypochondriacs as well.

I believe, that your experiences has a lot to do with psycology. Once you are made aware of something then your brain notices the information, because the brain has a filter for useless information. On the flip side, I assume, when the brain registers something familiar, that something is moreso recognized by you than other things--other things of which you have no connection. Weird huh? I notice this within myself all the time too! =D
Yes! I'm in Psychology & Life which relates psychological theories to basic aspects of life [go figure with the name - ha] & I now find myself over-analyzing everything! For a while I thought I was suffering from paranoia but apparently this is normal?
