Why do girls and guys cut themselves.... some say its for attention...while others say its deppression or family life or other things. Yes i used to... But i am here to tell you there are other ways than hurting yourself. I just recently talked to my friend and she keeps from cutting by writting notes to the people who stress her out... But never gives the notes to her friends. I have just started doing that and it seems to work really well! I was surprised! And rather than listening to deppressing music i listened to stuff that brings me up. Happy music. I also sing to take off the stress. And i run which people have said that running can really reduce stress. And it does. Also by just talking to people helps me out alot. I have now just been put on medicine for my depression and that to helps. It was hard for me to say anything to my mom because sometimes she isnt that understanding. But she finally was able to tell that i was depressed and put me on some of my medicine. Which was great. I do have my moments and its hard to get through them. Sometimes i think there is no way i can. But i stand tall and make it through. One song you really need to listen to is STAND IN THE RAIN by superchick. That song is very inspirational. I just heard it and it is very encouraging. I promise if i can make it through so can you. Im not going to lie it is very hard. But in the end it is so worth it trust me.
Cutting

One I think you should try writing about more "progressive things" But also many people get addicted to cutting because it releases a chemical in to your blood to help reduce the pain, and your body gets used to it, its like a drug addiction
Cutting is a manifestation of emotional pain. Some people cannot cope with emotional pain. It is too overwhelming for them to comprehend because when something hurts on the inside, you can't see it and so you don't know how to fix it.
When they cut, they can see a physical mark on pain, they can see it heal over time. It makes some people feel less numb inside, and more like they actually exist. It is a coping mechanism, however destructive.
Writing, listening to music, exercise, talking--these are constructive ways of coping. I'm glad you've been able to make them work for you, rather than hurting yourself. Some people can't, and that's why they (or someone makes them) seek help. A good psych unit will teach positive coping methods and encourage a patient to develop his or her own methods.
Platt3r is also correct, cutting becomes an addiction because it releases endorphins--the body's natural morphine source.
