STRESS! Cope the Healthy Way

As a high school senior enrolled in several AP classes, working a part-time job and committing to a full-time role as a varsity starter for the basketball team, I know how life gets very stressful! It is also hard to deal with stress when there are so many different mechanisms of coping and types of personalities to fit those processes. Thanks to AP Psychology I have learned from a certified professional the four coping strategies for stress:

1-Find the Hope
Everyone has a problem: your parents getting divorced, struggling with keeping grades up or learning your pregnant all cause significant stress. The first step in reducing it is to identify the problem and the thoughts associated with it. After discovering the thoughts behind the problem, take those thoughts and find the good side-find the hope. There is always something positive that can come from the problem no matter how small it may seem.

2-Relaxing Activities
Take a short walk outside. Take a power nap. Go stargazing. Make a smoothie. Lift some weights. Go out into a hot tub. Spend 30 minutes a day on YOU time. It is necessary for your stress to stay low and logical reasoning to stay high.

3-Time Out
Find yourself in a tense situation? Leave. Return after 3-10 minutes of cooling down. It is better to give yourself a short time out than to say something you will regret in an argument.

4-Support System
Support is from family, friends, teachers and counselors. Do not abuse their support-use it as you need it. And when you need to stay anonymous, call this number: 801-226-4433.

Stress happens to everyone-it’s part of life! How you deal with it makes you who you are.

Great post! However, I like to look at stress as a positive. It is what makes us get better and improve ourselves, so rather than getting too stressed out next time, try and appreciate the opportunity for growth!
