Why is the largest, most comprehensive article on the front page of almost every newspaper have on the Oscars? People are still into that? Is that really something occupying a lot of someone's time?
I can see how it is interesting, to see one's favorite celebrity, or most hated celebrity, what he or she is wearing, what is said...if one feels certain movies seen got what they deserve. But on the FRONT page...while the war in Iraq takes up the back page, along with global warming articles, and Presidental Campaign debate reviews?
Please explain to me how either the media got hold of society, or the other way around. Please explain to me how this is important enough to be on the front page.
Actually, I do understand. I am just upset. There is an overwhelming amount of depressing articles, confusing people, and other bad news to be seen...perhaps the Oscars and other "popular culture" items provide an escape from reality. However, when these kinds of events are posted on the front page of news papers and slipping out of news broadcaster's mouths...it's time to stop escaping and start doing something about it!
The shared responsibility I have talked about previously is getting left in the dust? I read an article about the dropping interest of teens to drive because there are more reasons for them to stay put inside now a days. Why with amazing technology of videogames, house parties, strict rules on teen drivers, and the like, I guess I would be deferred from learning how to drive too. Especially if my parents had high paying jobs and the desire to drive their baby around.
Oh please explain why at the time the world needs us the most, we are glued to the TV, the Oscars, the lives of unrealistic celebrities? Please someone explain how to change this idea of eternal escapism.

"Eternal escapism" is a good way to put it. People want to escape. They don't want to think about the bad things in life (the war), or responsible decisions (deciding who will be president). No, they'd rather obsess over celebrities.
I don't really have a problem with the Oscars being on the covers on newspapers because that is news. However, it seems that an ongoing thing conflict like the war is pushed aside because it's not NewsS. It's not a new thing anymore, so it is tossed aside like last season's flip flops.
This is something that my Political Science class was talking about recently, and I completely agree that the media and pop culture has unneccesariy taken over our lives. As a test, the teacher of the class asked us to raise our hands if we knew the latest on the Britney Spears debacle. Nearly all of us raised our hands. Then he asked us to raise our hands if we knew who Benzir Bhutto was. Only seven of us did. That, unfortunately, is what our society has succumbed to.
What upsets me most about it is that it is so hard to find a reputable news source for those of us who ARE interested in current events more than celebrity gossip.
At least it's the Oscars and not Britney Spears. The Oscars celebrate talent in acting, writing, and creating in general, that's a wonderful thing. Much better than the exploits of some celebrity.
