Everyone is talking about the possiblity of there being a recession. How horrible! Ok, so I guess it is really not that great, but that's life. Just from everyone talking about it, spending has supposedly decreased which is bad for the economy and all.
The government's solution is to give tax rebates. Isn't that nice? They're going to give me back some of my hard earned money that they decided to take away from me. Maybe they should give me that money they took for social security because, let me tell you, that hurt.
The most anyone can get from this rebate is $600 I believe and you just get it in the mail one day like magic. At least that's what I'm told. The theory is that people will get this money and spend it and the recession will be less likely and/ or severe. I don't know if this would really work. I'm a bit of a skeptic. I want to say that it'll work and think that it would work. But how effective is it to just give us our own money back. Maybe they should have planned for this and not taken so much during taxes and for that dang social security in the first place. (I have a problem with social security - they take so much money!)
Isn't this idea of taking money and then giving it back sorta like saying that we can't handle our own money or saying that the government doesn't know how to make it so they can have money to be run and keep the economy going and isn't that its job?
Yep, this is the conservative answer to recession. Instead of a New Deal (a green deal as it were), we're paying directly to citizens who may or may not, like you said, spend the rebate.
I dug John Edwards' plan. He would have taken the money (obviously we borrowed more from China to fund this operation) and invested it in green infrastructure, green jobs. You know, something for the future. But instead we're investing in consumers. Gotta get some more Wal-Mart plastics. Gotta feed the monkey, right?
