The Rise of the Christian Film

In the past, the first thing people, even church-goers, thought of when they heard "Christian film" was "mediocre," "garbage," "not worth seeing." However, all that is beginning to change.

"The Passion of the Christ" was the first movie that showed how huge the market for Christian films is. "Passion" easily became the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time. "The Nativity Story" and "Amazing Grace" have shown similar success. "Amazing Grace" is bringing in higher box office sales than "Astronaut Farmer," even though it is being shown in less than half as many theaters.

Many people want to watch movies that are enjoyable but clean; and Christian filmmakers are beginning to realize that they can make a movie that is based upon Christian principles, but is not preachy. All five major production studios now have "inspirational" divisions that are beginning to produce both direct-to-DVD movies, and films for theatrical release.

As a Christian preparing to enter the film industry, this is an exciting time for me. Hollywood is still a very dark place, but, working together as filmmakers and audiences, we can shine our Light.

Thanks for the comment, yes, I am loving the fact that there are amazing quality movies coming out that have Christian pricipal but are not "preachy". It's great! It gets people into the film and hopefully get people thinking. That's the key. :-)

You know, the secular media is noticing too... and they are responding by MAKING Christian films! Fox and other movie companies have developed "Christian" movie departments within their organizations... to make money off of Christians! It's a shame, really! We are being taken for a fool. We boycott some movie makers but actually don't even know we are buying into them! be careful and be aware!

I agree with your excitement, and am jumping up and down right alongside you. So many christians before now have shunned Hollywood and deemed it evil, however, i don't think they really took into account the powerful impact they could have on a culture that lives from movie to movie. It seems that with the popularity of films and such of these sorts that present a positive message are just what we have been waiting for. I hope you are able to get out there and shine!

Love,
Katherine Michelle
