Things to Get Used To...

Ok, so I know I just did a blog about college, but there is always more to say...

The Hardest Things to Get Used to in College...

1. Chances are, you professors have NO idea who you are.
I went to see my favorite professor in his office to get some notes I missed. He was like "Hi, and you are...?" Another professor of mine...I have had his class 2 semesters in a row, been very vocal and been to his office several times. He still doesn't know my name. Disheartening? Yeah, a bit. But that can be explained by number 2.

2. 300+ people in a class.
Gen. Ed. classes are HUGE. Yes, I do have a few smaller Gen. Ed classes, but even those are 50 people strong. That is WAY more than I am used to. It can be really hard to pay attention in this situation, especially if people around you are talking. This is when you use your skills to tune out everyone but the professor (even if s/he doesn't know your name)!

3. Dorm Life.
I am an only child. Dorm life was had at first...I was NOT used to having to turn down my music or tv for someone else. I was not used sharing my space. I was not used to people walking in and out of my room whenever they felt like it.
It gets easier. :)

4. Dorm Life Part 2. The Food.
I don't have a meal plan. Of all the people I know that have a meal plan, none of them eats every meal in the school cafe. No stoves, no toaster, no George Foreman Grill. At you get is a mini-fridge and a microwave. The freezer section is tiny and it's hard to buy a lot of food because you have no room to store it all. However, you get pretty creative with your recipes. The most important part of dorm food is to balance good tasting food with healthy food. Bagel pizza and salad anyone?

5. The Freedom!!!
The good part! You don't have to tell anyone where you are going and no one expects you home at curfew. I don't think I need to explain this. Just don't go overboard.

6. The Drama.
I live with four girls, including me. We have two girlfriends that are here a lot too. There is SO much drama, with boys, with other girls, with each other. The best idea is to listen, try not to take sides and know when to pick your battles. Know when to shut up. :)

7. Huge Classes Part 2.
It's not the easiest place to meet people. In a class of 300, it can be hard to just start talking to someone. I usually try to jump in when people ask abotu assignments.

8. The Tests.
Last semester, a test a week, every week with out fail. Throw a paper and a few assignments on that, and you are completely swamped. Sty organized and manage your time well...

Well, those are the hardest things I had to get used to...
Add your own..
Sound off.

I went to a school last year where my class only had fifteen students in it. And this year I was cyber-schooled so my brother and I were the only 'students' in the room. So I imagine you are right about the adjustment to college class sizes. I have chosen a college where the teacher/student ratio is about 1 to 13 (if I recall right, but don't quote me on that), so it shouldn't be too bad, but I will definitely remember some of these things as I prepare for college in the fall.
