Your Social Security # = Your identity

People say it is important to keep your social security number secret. So hackers and thefts don't steal your identity and go on shopping sprees. Yet, as a senior in high school, I have used it a lot for college applications and finanical aid. I have used it on scholarships even and to get credit cards. It is ridiculous how many places require it yet this number is suppose to be kept secret.
These numbers are our identity. They show the government who we are, how much we make, and other personal information. We use it for our retirement funds in the future. We use it for file income taxes. It also acts as a pin number to tell companies who we are.
All this sharing of our social security numbers makes me wonder how unsafe it is for all these people to know it. If it is so important, why must we use it on almost everything? How do we know it is safe to trust these strangers who work for various companies to know our social security numbers? They could steal our identities quite easily. So easy that we wouldn't even know it.

the government is going to try and convince you to have an ID chip implanted :)

because obviously the confidentiality of this number has been breached......because they amde you use it so often.....its a circular tactic they often claim ignorance of.

Your social security number is your identitiy. It is a unique number that distinguishes you from everyone else. That is why you have to have it on everything. The companies and different places you send it to have safeguards to keep their employees from stealing it.

Well fuck, if my social security number is my identity, I'd like to trade it in, or at least get a refund.

They are required to have safeguards, but that doesn't mean that they are enforced. I've seen hundreds of job applications with social security numbers, birthdates, etc. and was never advised to not steal the info. I could have easily memorized, transcribed, or photocopied the info and used it had I wanted to.

Only give it to reputable companies, or those you have dealt with in the past. Also, be careful with scholarships. Some scholarships are scams as well, and could recruit information this way.
