You hear all over the news about how the elderly and young children are in desperate need of health care. Did you know that the largest amount of uninsured induviduals are in their 20's? I live in the hole they named Arkansas and if your not old, pregnant, or a child it is practically impossible to get medicaid. Because I am 25 years old I am not able to get insurance through either of my parents. Although I have moved back home and am only working part-time for my school I am not allowed to be my parent's dependent and be insured by them. A couple months ago I went to my local Department of Human Services to find out if a full time college student was eligible for medicaid. They gave me three sheets of paper and told me I had to get personal refrences from three people who were not family. Can you belive that? Not once in my life have I ever turned to the government for anything. I would never look for a hand out, but what if something happened to me? I am one serious injury or illness away for personal ruin. Sure if I had gone to college straight out of high school then I wouldn't be having this problem. But sometimes in an individuals life they need to find out the hard way what they need to do with their life. Every time I hear on the news about health care I want to scream and throw something through the television set. Health care is so expensive that people my age just can't afford it. Massachusetts has a good idea. They recently passed and new radical bill that says everyone in the state will have health care. Those who already have will get a new break and those who do not will have it now. I know that universal health care is not the answer. My mom is european and she had an uncle who waited 6 months for major heart surgery because they only could afford to do so many in a period of time. But something has got to give.
