Should the Legal Drinking Age be Changed?

Tagged:  •

At age 18 I can have a child, drive a car, pay all my bills, die for my country, and go watch strippers, yet I cant legally have an alcoholic drink?  After a long day at work my boss relaxes with a can of beer, but 18 year olds who work just as hard, if not harder, do not have that luxury.  I ask your opinion if this is right?  Should I be able to die for my country but not drink a can of beer?

I TOTALLY AGREE!

However, I recently researched this and found the basis for this law is this: your liver and kidneys and other organs do not fully finish developing until you are 21. So they say that is the reason the law is what it is. Bogus, but makes sense when you think about it.

There are other loop hole laws also though. In WI, you can drink at the bar with you parents but you can't even sit at the bar if you are between 18 and 21. That is what they told me when I went to be sober cab and ordered a lemon water in a town less than 30 people. Funny huh?

Yes you can do all that at 18 but you can also have a baby when you 13- doesn't mean you should. I really think that our government- through strict alcohol laws- has made drinking a "guilty pleasure." Unlike in Germany, Italy, France, etc. where they can legally drink at MUCH younger ages and the countries do not have near the # of alcoholics as the US.

Here is a little tidbit (since you brought up serving your country)when I was in the Army (early 90's) I could go to bars on the base and drink (I was 18). Yet when my husband joined (mid 90's) this law had changed. I always argued that one too.

As one website says..."They can’t even have a celebratory sip of champagne at their own weddings." Which was the case with me- I was 20 when I married. When I did turn 21 I experienced what alot of newie 21 yr-olds do---I rarely drink now. Because I know when I want a margarita or a beer I can get one out of the fridge or run up to the store and get it. Between 17 and 21 I binged on alcohol (kind of a take it when you get it- type thing)

I say either lower the drinking age to 18 or change all of the other things (that you can do at 18) to meet 21. I know the last one sucks--beut at least keep it equal.

Yeah i think it should be 18, If we could go to war and die for our country at 18 at least let us have a beer before we go.

It dosnt matter if its 21 or 18, people are still going to do it illegaly anyways.

But once it change to 18 people are going to want it just to be legal for all ages and then we just have drunk drivers everywhere.
