Protecting Prostitution...

Don't ask me why I'm sitting here doing this. I've had an online journal since the 8th grade, and have been trying, without result mind you, to ween myself off of the habit. Glancing over "FastWeb Scholarships" I stumbled across this, figured what the hell and here I am.

Today I was reading over an article by Dozema talking about the subjectivity of rights for prostitution. I'm sure my seminar will rip the article to pieces, but before I walk into that debate, I figured I should get my personal thoughts in order. Think about it: what's the problem with a prostitute getting assistance from their respective governments? Their services are needed, appreciated, and in constant demand. Stamping sex as something which shouldn't be sold seems kind of hypocritical in my mind. So many products have commericals with scantily clad women and men rubbing aganist one another, the invisible tagline? "Buy this product, and you will get laid." Prostitution is just a step above. Rather an empty promises, you're actually getting what you so badly desire.

If somebody wants their body to be their mode of making it in the world, who gets to say that it's immoral? If countries would focus on their economies instead of wars on terror and whatnot, perhaps those walking the streets would have the opportunity to do something more 'respectable.' Unfortunately, when somebody falls on hard times their government generally turns the blind eye.

Like it or not, sex has become a product.
The least we can do is acknowledge it and make sure those working the industry get just as many rights and though strangled by tie and suit behind a desk.

First, welcome to ProgressiveU. Hopefully it will be something you can enjoy. It's certainly interesting to say the least.

Now, for a suggestion. You might want to name your post something else, especially if you'll be participating in the contest (starts Feb 15th, 2008). People tend to see First Post, Post Number 1, etc and skip it thinking it's just an introduction and doesn't talk about anything they would want to read. The consensus seems to be that introduction posts and posts about your day, drama, etc are the enemy and should relegated to some other site. Anyway, just a suggestion.

Good luck!
