About a week ago, I read heard a lot of stuff on the news about a probe finding drugs in drinking water. Among the pharmaceuticals found were antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers and sex hormones. The concentrations of the drugs is supposedly minimal, but I can’t help but wonder what tiny affect they may have when taken over a long period of time. It’s hard to believe that these drugs have absolutely no possible affect on us, considering how they may react with other drugs that we may be taking.
I am particularly concerned with the issue because one of the 24 major cities affected by this possible problem is my home town of Tucson, Arizona. I feel a little bit violated, as these chemicals are getting into, and have been getting into, my body for years, without me having the slightest idea.
I, at first, wondered, as I’m sure many of you do, how the drugs got into the water supply anyway. Well, people take these prescription drugs, and their body doesn’t absorb all of it. The medication that is not absorbed passes through the body and is flushed through the toilet. The water is treated before released back into our natural water supplies, but most treatments do not remove all residue.
One additional concern that I have with this problem is how it could affect wildlife. Our drinking water goes through many additional steps before it touches our lips, but wild animals drink it straight from the source.

Huh. I wonder how it would affect animals too. If a deer drank some Viagra-tainted water, would there be some side effects?
Do you think buying one of those water purifier things that hook directly onto the faucet could help you any?

I'm not a scientist, but my guess is no. The filtering that the government does is pretty extensive and a personal filter probably won't take out much that's been missed. I think those filters primarily just filter out stuff from the pipes along the way, if anything
Scientist here! A very high quality filter could help. A water distillation system could also remove most impurities. Millipore filters could remove all impurities- they remove huge amounts of gunk even from distilled water.
