I want to post something I did for class, but when I cut and paste from Word everthing gets messed up.

Sometimes when you cut and paste from Word or other word processing programs things works fine, but often things get messed up if you have special formatting in your original document.

There are a couple of options.  If the problems are simple (like extra lines between paragraphs), you can just do your edits in the Body window and preview the post again until it looks OK.

In general though, we recommend that you save your document as a text file (throwing away all the original formatting), then cut and paste it into the Body window, and finally add any formatting that you need using the editor buttons on this site.

Here's how you would do that:

  • In your word processor, choose "save as" and select "text only" as the document type.  The word processor will warn you that you will loose all formatting.  Click OK (or "yes").
  • After you've saved your document in text format, close your word processor, and open the new document (the document name will likely now end with .txt) again with a simple text editor.  On Windows the text editor is called Notepad, and if you double click on a text document it will automatically open with Notepad.
  • Copy and paste the text into the Body window of the Progressive U editor.
  • You'll loose things like italics, bold, and centering, but hopefully it won't be as funky-looking as before.
  • Don't go overboard with formatting in the editor -- just simple formatting is good for a blog!
