I am a high school senior and I really hate standardized testing. I understand the significance of state testing and appreciate the help it can be for students. The standardized testing that I can’t stand is the testing that is practically required and is monopolized by Collegeboard. The Collegeboard sets high prices to their services that students must pay in order to enter a college or take any step forward. The SAT and SAT II as well as the AP exams are administered by the College board. I have paid fees for all of these and that has put a major dent in my pocket book. College bound students already need a lot of money in order to pay the tuition fees for college. AP exams are the exams administered at the end of college level high school courses. These tests are written by the college board, which means they’re setting the standards. I don’t know about others, but I don’t feel comfortable having one corporation deciding what you should be taught and who should go to college. Another thing that I see in my community is the financial state of a student allows them to excel. The richer students take more AP classes and do more to help their grades. They also apply to ALL of the state schools as a “backup” because they can afford it. That leaves other less fortunate students with a smaller chance of getting into a school with all of the spaces taken up by those more fortunate students. The SAT, if it is going to be require at least for state schools, should be administered by public schools, not a corporation.
