Bush criticized for claims in speech on Iraq War

Tagged:  •

Speaking before an audience of 750 soldiers and airmen on Tuesday night at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, US President Bush began an effort to shore up waning support for military actions in Iraq.

Within the speech, President Bush commented that he does not feel that setting a timeline for withdrawal of troops, or sending more troops, are the right solutions to the problems in the area.

The president said in the speech: "Some Americans ask me, if completing the mission is so important, why don't you send more troops? If our commanders on the ground say we need more troops, I will send them. But our commanders tell me they have the number of troops they need to do their job." US Commanders have previously commented on the problems caused by lack of coverage at the Syrian border.

The president brought up the September 11, 2001 attacks on five occasions during the speech, but did not refer to the now-relinquished hunt for weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) in Iraq. The U.S. has failed to turn up evidence for the existence of a WMD; a major premise President Bush made for the invasion of Iraq.

Democrats criticized the president for trying to link 9/11 with the war in Iraq;"The president's frequent references to the terrorist attacks of September 11 show the weakness of his arguments," Nancy Pelosi, House Democratic leader, said. "He is willing to exploit the sacred ground of 9/11, knowing that there is no connection between 9/11 and the war in Iraq."

Opinion polling conducted this week by USA Today, CNN and Gallup found for the first time that a majority of Americans, 50% to 47%, see the Iraq war as something separate from what Bush is calling the "global war against terrorism."

A Mea Culpa speech was more in order The President made an egregious , costly and misleading decision when he made this preemptive strike in Iraq. We will pay for this catastrophe for years to come. He made our bed; now we lie in it. New, courageous , forthright leadership with a respect for the international community is sorely needed.

Lest we forget, the reason for invading Iraq was not wholly centered around weapons of mass destruction. That's all the media is showing you. President Bush had outlines 4 other reasons, which are legitimate cases for going to Iraq. You might want to read over the UN Security Resolutions.

Too many Americans seem unwilling to believe that there is true evil in the world that must be stopped. Take a step back and consider these things.
Innocent civilians on the mainland of the Unitied States absorbed the largest attack by a foreign force since the war of 1812.
The people responsible for that attack were radical Muslims.
The cradle of radical Muslim is the Middle East, the area has trained, and financed thousands of these killers.

So logically from a military response standpoint the Middle East is our target. Afganistan is most to blame for 9/11 so again it is logical to start with them. However over throwing that government with a democratic one is not going to be enough to let the bad guys know we are serious. So you ask who else in the region is a good target....... IRAQ is the obvious answer.

Insane dictator with a God complex, a proven admiration of WMDs, and enough money to do pretty much anything he wants. The country is big, well known, and has been a pain in the world communities butt for a long a time. Convert IRAQ to a friendly democracy and the Middle East is well on thier way to becoming a more civilized place. Now I don't know about you but to me that plan borders on brillance. A measured military response to give an oppressed people a chance at a much better life, creating another line of defense against additional attacks here.

The primary reason we went into IRAQ was never WMDs, Sadam's torture chambers, or his being a threat to the region. It was about using our greatest weapon (democracy) to make the next generation of Muslims from the middle east less likely to drive airplanes in American buildings

Insane dictator with a God complex, a proven admiration of WMDs, and enough money to do pretty much anything he wants. The country is big, well known, and has been a pain in the world communities butt for a long a time.

I'm confused. Are you talking about Saddam and Iraq, or Bush and the United States?

Oh, that IS a good one.

So it apparently dosen't bother you at all that all of the stated reasons Bush and his neo-con pals stated to invade Iraq were lies..and they knew they were lies the whole time. After all the evidence thats been out there, including the Downing St. Memo, that it was an orchestrated lie from the very beginning. Manipulating dull-witted folks like yourself who would rather let the corporate stooge in the white house do your thinking for you. Hussien is / was a miserable despot, but there are plenty of them in the world, most of the African continent for example. I'm sure history will portray Dubya as the most ill-equipped and reckless president our nation has had the misfortune of living under. His mishandling of the war on terrorism has done nothing but multiply their numbers by giving them all the more reason to recruit followers by this invasion. The simple fact is America no longer had the Shah of Iran as out puppet in the middle east and trying to reshape Iraq was all about creating another Iran of the past for America and the oil companies...Don't you see the hypocracy in a man who professes to believe in God, and yet can initiate a war causing over 1700 american deaths ( many more to come ), over 13,000 injured american kids so far and well over 100,000 Iraqi killed...all based on reasons that were concocted to dupe lemmings like yourself ? You pathetic flag wavers are the problem. The only reason Bush and Co. have gotten away with all the carnage they have, not to mention the miserable domestic policies all to benefit corporations and millionairs is because the GOP has control of all three branches of the goverment....It isn't supposed to work that way and infact we are seeing what happens every day in the news. The Congress is supposed to keep a control on the executive branch as the representitives of the people, not rubberstamp ever insane decision they make. Our goverment is currently not working, there are no checks and balances. The very definition of a patriot is the right to redress our goverment when we dissagree, but in this climate , when you do, you are painted as some trator.....when you goose-step behind a war-mongering idiot, you are one of them, no better....in fact maybe your worse. Atleast they know what they are doing. You are just one of the lemmings helping them achieve their goals. I can only hope, with the passage of time, all you supporters of this administration can proudly wear the stain of helping him accomplish what he has. Because our kids will be paying the price for along time, and I hope somehow you and your kind will be made known to them.

D Williams:
Yeah, the Middle East sure is the "cradle of extreme Muslim." It's called 'Islam,' by the way. Lest I remind you:
--> America helped Saddam Hussein into power. WE gave him money, WE gave him weapons...Why? Because Saddam Hussein's government was SECULAR. And this secular government sure was helpful to America... after all just about the time we helped Saddam into power, the Iranians went radical. Convenient? The ensuing eight-year war took millions of lives... didja know 70% of Iran is under the age of thirty? There's a reason for that... I wonder why so many people in the Middle East hate America.... hmmm...
--> The Middle East is not our target, the terrorists are. That's like saying, "Damn, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor! Let's go invade ASIA." Getting the bad guys is one thing; invading entire countries where tens of thousands of innocent civillians will die in the cross fire is something else.
--> Yeah, toppling a dictatorship seems like a good thing to do. Installing a democratic government, rebuilding the country and ensuring that millions of subjugated people will live happily in liberty is a brilliant scheme, I must admit. It won't work. Did anybody topple King George for the colonists? NO. We FOUGHT for democracy because we wanted it. If you give people democracy, they won't appreciate it. And, America had the benefit of being birthed during a period of intellectual enlightenment with two thousand years of intellectual though on the development of a government, which, might I add, was endemic to EUROPE. Certainly, the Middle East has thousands of years of history behind it... problem is, it's not the SAME history as America's. How many democratic governments were there in ancient Persia, Babylon, or during the Crusades? Draw your own conclusions. You talk about the Middle East like it's uncivilized because there are no democratic governments there...
--> So, how long will this go on? Afghanistan, Iraq... who's next? Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Iran, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait... How many TRILLIONS of dollars and TENS OF THOUSANDS of American lives must be wasted before we convert these people to 'our' way of thinking? And YOU think that will make the world a safe place? Let me remind you: Hezbollah, the TERRORIST organization, has 12 seats in the Lebanese parliament!!! Give the terrorists democracy, and they're still terrorists!! They'll still want to kill you!!
--> Radical Islam is a way of thinking, an idea. You can't fight an idea with guns. Which is why they claim democracy will solve this problem... but realize this: fundamentalists will not RECOGNIZE this government, ESPECIALLY if it is secular!! Their government is their religion, be it Islam or otherwise.
--> Fact is this: INVADING other countries and causing innumerable innocent deaths will only breed MORE terrorists. If we're the aggressor, we give the radical Muslims the power, too, because in their religion war is only acceptable in DEFENSE.

This seems brilliant to you, huh. You wanna go fight? DO IT. If this ridiculous scheme of aggression continues, you'll have no choice. And you can't run to Canada, either. Maybe what we ought to do is this: change our foreign policy to a strictly ISOLATIONIST one, the way it was meant to be... and not screw with other countries, creating and toppling governments at will. THAT's why they hate us. It has nothing to do with Democracy. And almost nothing to do with religion.. radical Islam is just a means of unifying a bunch of pissed off people. Take a class in Middle Eastern studies and you'll see why.

I agree, but Bush is incapable of admitting that he made a mistake. Recall during the Presidential debates when Jim Lehrer asked him to name one mistake he's made, Bush couldn't do it. Bush claimed he hadn't made any mistakes.

Bush provided absolutely no information during his speech regarding what's going to be done differently in Iraq.

We, at least, can thank Mr. Bush and his collaborators for one consolation. It is doubtful that any other group of self-righteous and self-serving adventurers would have the capacity to do as much damage to the national and international interests as these people have done in four short years. What's next?

Don't ask!!!!! :O:

You could not be more right: read the article in the online
USA today about the wmd's that didn't exist. he and his government cronies who lied with him carry the weight of all those who have died in iraq as their legacy during their republican grand stand. if
dubba, bubba or georgie boy wanted to do something to really make an
impact...HOW ABOUT RESIGNING????? HOPEFULLY IT'LL BE A LONG TIME BEFORE WE HAVE AN OTHER CRAZY REPUBLICIAN AS PRESIDENT. IMPEACHMENT IS IN ORDER BUT NOBODY HAS THE BALLS TO BRING IT UP.... keep up the good work jj...see ya later

Wake up America - you still don't get it.

President Bush lied to us and the rest of the world about his reasons to invade Iraq - WMD. The truth is Mr. Bush had decided to invade Iraq during his first Cabinet Meeting in January 2001.

Now he is using 9/11 as justification for staying in Iraq trying to to track down and kill terrorists in Iraq and in over 50 other countries. He and he alone created the terrorists that we are now fighting in Iraq and other places. THERE IS NO CONNECTION BETWEEN 9/11 AND IRAQ AND SADDAM.

Further, over 1,500 of our people have been killed and another 13,000 injured. Nobody has told us what the total number of dead is. We deserve to know this.

We should never have invaded Iraq in the first place. This is another Vietnam and Bush won't admit this.

Iraq doesn't really want our form of govenment and the so-called "democracy" as we have here in the United States.

It is time we admit our mistake, set a firm time table to withdraw, and do it.

Sad to say, there is no withdrawl - no timetable. At minimum it will take 5 years to withdraw troops. The insurgency will lessen over time, though there will always be suicde missions. Going after the taliban was one thing. Going after Sadam was another.

Bush went after Sadam merely because Sadam tried to kill his daddy. Bush is brash, a man's man, and certainly no intellectual. As a result, Bush should be impeached for the misuse of the military. To quote supporting our troops in Iraq, would be synomous of supporting child molesting priest just because they are priests.

Bush's team got the jewish vote, you don't have it you can't govern the US.

When Bush went after Sadam, he went after Sadam, but in the process never thought it out, and his team said, that they will embrace us - typical Yanqui imperialism. Guess what, Muslims all over the world were offended. Bottom line is that there are things that gnaw at a man more than to die - you are seeing it first hand in Iraq.

Our troops are in the wrong - they aren't allowed to think, but you have to support them, as their mission, Bush's mission is wrong. The war with muslims will last decades or until Israel makes peace with its neighbors.

kkdtor

Obviously you, as you descibe President Bush, are not an intellectual either.

Please don't confuse Jewish with Israeli. Bush got 24% of the Jewish vote in 2004. That means 76% of American Jews got it right, but nobody's perfect. Obviously, you can govern the US without the Jewish vote.

Also, don't assume that all Israelis support their government. It's like the rest of the world assuming that all Americans are Republicans. We're not all that ignorant or selfish.

Maybe if the rest of America had voted at the same ratio as the Jewish community, there'd be a different resident at the WH.

Hope to see the flag waving SUVs with the support our troops sticker for years to come 8).

Your flag decal won't get you into heaven anymore

Imposing Democracy on Iraq through war is like preserving Virginity by having intercourse.

Geuss you never heard of the American revolution. Educate yourself before you speak.

Yeah, I guess you never heard of FSLN, FMLN, Iraqui Insurgency, ELN, etc either that are fighting against imposed issues just like we did during the american revolution from the Brittish, I tottaly agree.

Too bad we didn't have tons of Chinese over here during the American Revolution training us in guerrilla tactics, and controlling our natural resources to export and fund their own agenda without taking into consideration the word Sovereignty and independence.

No comparison between Iraq and A.Rev.

The difference between them and our revolution is that we wanted freedom and peace, they just want to kill anyone that is an infidel, or by definition, not a muslum.

and I am sure the Iraquis want freedom and peace and RIGHT TO SELF DETERMINATION. just like we did.

Actually, the far, far right-wing, evangelistic religious types have a higher incidence of being HIV-positive via oral sex, etc. ;)

lol, good comment (actually the far far right) in reference to that shallow response above the Right wing oral sex comment,

Bush should lead by example...SEND HIS DAUGHTERS TO IRAQ

Yeah, and Cheney's daughter, etc., etc. Why can't they practice what they preach? Oh, that's right -- they're hypocrites, THAT's why not!

Ummmm...hello? This is an ADULT, VOLUNTEER military.
The best in the world, as a matter of fact. Parents have NO right sending their ADULT kids to the military - war or peace. If the twins don't want to serve, why should the volunteer forces have to serve next to someone who does NOT want to be there?

What a juvenile statement.

Yeah, but for how long?

we don't want drunks or dope fiends in our army!

If its good enough to be our president, why isn't it good enough to be a soldier ?

Falling from grace

Both George W. Bush and Arnold Schwarzenegger find themselves in quite different positions of favor from the time they were elected. The real reasons may be more complex than one might imagine, but it seems on the surface at least to be the way an electorate with average intelligence perceives them.

Before you blow the politically correct whistle on the “average intelligence

Google news...

This theme was at the top of googles news chart for maybe 5 minutes until it was knocked off by a FOX news item right away.
Amazing how they are trying to control the net too.

Yahoo's news just might be run by Fox, for how right-wing it is. Google is supposed to be more progressive, according to www.buyblue.org -- tho it's awful hard to tell sometimes.

I'm finding it harder every day to fight off the near rabid anti-American onslaught from more than 50% of the European (never mind Arab or Asian), normally rational friends of mine when I dare mention anything to do with the United States. Can they all be wrong, ill-informed, or envious? And if so, what does that say about my choice of friends? The real news to me is that nearly 50% of the U.S. is still in denial about the war on the Iraqis. I suppose it shouldn't surprise me too much being British and seeing how the majority back home still interpret the "troubles" in Ireland.

Some oyt there claim not to know the connection between 9 11 and Iraq. How absurd. But for those that are in denail because of thier hatred for the Pres. I will tell you the connection in one sentence, Muslums that want to kill us. For all you slow ones out there try and understand that Iraq is but one battle in the war.

Yeah, thanks to GWB they'll be hating us for decades, if not centuries. The ultra-right fanatic muslims have gotten an unimaginable amount of gasoline poured onto their fires, and they know how to get the most out of all this. America & Americans will be hated as never before, all because our oil corporations with out-of-control greed lust for Arab oil.

Why do the oil companies refuse to do the R&D on alternatives, especially with all the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ they have? No one has yet answered this one.

Guest wrote:

WHAT?????
That is really ignorant, my pal.
Do your friggin homework before you ask such stupid questions.
Try googling Texaco....BP Amoco...Shell.... and renewable energy.

Ya think just MAYBE Shell has invested just a WEE bit of
R&D into their solar energy? http://www.shell.com/home/Framework?siteId=rw-br

Sheesh - guess this site is not as progressive as they claim.

First of all, this *IS* America, and the oil companies, last time I checked have the LIBERTY - AND OBLIGATION to invest where they think they will have the most success. If consumers are not happy with the level of alternative energy R&D investments in existing US oil companies, invest your $$$ in companies more in line with your vision. Of course that is limited, because the payoff is not so great. There are reasons companies are not flocking to fill the world with solar panels. IT IS EXPENSIVE. And UGLY. Just like hybrid cars. You still have to PRODUCE the panels. THAT takes money and materials which are still relying on old technologies.

Of course they invest more in reliable technologies which are still turning profits. At the risk of sounding like my teenager....DUH.
How long would a company be in business if they forfeit their ROI?

Yes, I want PROGRESSIVE solutions. So, what are they? Why haven't any of the liberal billionaires started their own renewable resource facilities? Why are they spending more money on political events which promote the latest and greatest talking head? The billions of dollars thrown about for travel, political fund raisers, etc...could be put to REAL use, and set REAL examples, don't you think? I think they have been dragging their feet there, just like in the Stem Cell research. They KNOW the ROI is not there - if it WERE, the money would be flowing like water.

It's bush's battle and also a battle we shouldn't have started nearly by ourselves. We would be better served if those troops he is wasting in Iraq were finding bin ladin

Boy are you afraid.
Aliens want to abduct us also, for the misinformed.

So what is the connection? From your detailed explanation the "simple" truth is; muslims want to kill Americans - Iraq is a muslim state - killing of muslims is self-defense - watch out all muslims states - you're guilty by association and therefore next on the bombing list. How absurd.

I thought this was supposed to be a "PROGRESSIVE SITE"
I have not read anything PROGRESSIVE yet - just the same old tired "bush lied people died" mantra. If Bush lied - the world has been lying for years. Tell the troops guarding the no-fly zone that Saddam was not violating treaties. WHAT do you "progressive types" propose to do with regimes like that in Iraq? Let them continue to steal from, starve, torture and murder their people in order to BUILD WEAPONS, FUND TERRORISM? (yes, Virgina - that's right - HE FUNDED TERRORISM!!! ) Grow even more anti-US sentiment as we do nothing to enforce the 14 agreements already made? And exactly what would we do with Syria, and Iran were we to leave Saddam in power? Wait - I know...let him get old, die...then let his SONS take over? Open your damned eyes, you "PROGRESSIVES" Somebody PLEASE point me to the progressive solution to the messes in the middle east. PLEASE.
I know - this would include the United Nations, right? Of course -the ones who were ENABLING this sick bastard to stay in power and bilk the OFF programs and kill his people, while blaming the US for their ills. I would LOVE to read better solutions - but so far, there have not been any from your side of the banana boat. PS - a REAL solution will require more than a group of people on a roof singing about Coca Cola.

Wow, you don't sound angry. I think that you deffinatlly have a piont. Democrats nead to learn how to put a better face on the mesege that they send out into the world. That includes formulating more plans and spreading the ones that already exist. We also nead to relize that name calling gets us no where and simply repeles people from the party.
At the same time. I think that you nead to relize that we (democrats)occationally do have a valid piont. It tends to evock a sense of rage in me when the government messes with my right to liberty (or anyones right to liberty for that matter) I tend to get the same fealing when the government lies to me.
So...about Iraq. We're already in there, it seams to me that it would be dissasterous for us to leave now. I honestlly think that the only long-term solution is going to come through greater education of the Iraqi people along with more a new respect for there culture. In my humble oppinion, I believe that our greatest hope will be in a new generation of Iraqi citizens.

Bush and his Usraeli friends will stay in Iraq untill the last drop of oil is pumped out of the ground. And then some, as this invasion has been 150 years in the making by the "Learned Elders of Zion", here below is the URL to their protocols. Read it and understand that unfortunately nothing can stop them anymore in their quest for world hegemony, unless China, Russia, India and Brazil turn the tables on them. That also is in the making with a future of enormous misery for innumerable people all over the world. Go here: http://www.biblebelievers.org.au/przion1.htm
And while you guys are at it, here is a nice little information to study: http://www.lifeaftertheoilcrash.net/

Ahh....a hoax (Protocol of the Learned Elders) and an Attorney Nee Prophet (Matt Savinar) Golly Gee I sure know where to come for MY education!! HEHEHE

..we have no need to police the world... but they do it anyway... soon the Gestapo will be after us "liberals" for posting anti government sentiment on the net... the road to serfdom had been paved... all hail bush [/sarcasm]

So - we have no need to "police the world" yet it is somehow our responsibility to SAVE it? How do you figure that? I didn't read a post where YOU said we should save it...but if you are a liberal, I'm going out on a limb guessing that you think we should fight poverty, aids, starvation, torture and genocide around the world...eh?

According to popular world belief, it is up to US to step in to stop genocide. It is up to US to fight poverty (generally due to corrupt regimes)...exactly how do you propose we fight these things if we DON'T police these governments?
PLEASE explain this to me.

By not giving them the weapons to commit genocide first.

Tell me. Where were we in Rwanda or Sudan recently? I'll tell you. We were too busy committing our own atrocities to get involved.

You know China only buys soy beans and scrape medal from United States? Who's more important Bush or America?

Since this conversation has paused for a while, I would like to step back a moment and inject some new information. The Iraq war is not part of the war on terrorism, and never has been. Check out http://www.iraqtimeline.com/index2.html for the historical context for this latest chapter in a story which began in the 19th century, not 9/11. The crisis to which the Bush Administration is attending is not terrorism, but the "peak oil" crisis. Saudi Arabia cannot pump more "sweet crude" that our refineries can economically process than they already are. They have "peaked" in oil production. Saudi Arabia can increase production only by pumping more sulfurous crude which is of low value to us. Iraq was "capped" in 1991 and the United States spent over ten years building the United Nations case with resolutions passed by the Security Council specifically designed to justify our military intervention to tap into this oil, which was already leased to France and Russia. "Guest" cited those resolutions, which is part of the plan. But those resolutions are a sham to hide the real purpose, though not hidden very far for anyone who researches the issue in any depth.

Indeed, the fact the peak oil crisis would happen has been known at least since I took environmental science classes in 1972 -- the only question was when Saudi would reach the peak production limitation of sweet crude. Many, many intelligence operatives have tried to pry the actual geological information out of the Saudis ever since, but it became obvious in the late 1990s that the Saudis were tapped out. The neoconservatives published in 1997 (see the web posting www.newamericancentury.org/statementofprinciples.htm for details, and a surprisingly familiar list of signatories to the original statement) a Statement of Principles for a Project For A New American Century. Browse their web site. Our soldiers' fates and military leadership is now in the hands of those who wrote those words.

When peak oil production in Saudi Arabia was obvious, those dedicated to this doctrine believed they had to act. Afghanistan had to be subdued for the Caspian oil reserves to be piped down to the Persian Gulf across that country and Pakistan. Iraq had to be tapped (the treasure in the "blood and treasure" rhetoric of the elected neoconservatives at the time we went into Iraq) because it is the second largest oil reserve left in the world. Anwar is nothing and means nothing relative to this last place America can gain control, wresting the oil leases from France and Russia and claiming them for our own.

The problem is, these political professionals needed to get back in power to enact their policies. George Bush's campaign for President started with a barbecue in Texas at which 38 million dollars was raised. That's million. The stakes were high, and are now even higher. As high as this cost may be, it is nothing compared to the blood of thousands of our soldiers and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis. Unfortunately, 9/11 was just the excuse the neoconservatives needed to move forward with preconceived plans -- and that cynical depravity was only the beginning of their high crimes against America. And, of course, they didn’t even have the courage to tell us what they were doing. And for that crime, they must pay by being stripped of their power no matter what their real reasons might be or how justified those reasons may seem. They have crossed the Rubicon, and for that they must be punished. The best way to punish a rich person is to make them poor. The best way to punish those in power is to strip them of all power, forever.

American soldiers have never died for a President or a party. They die for the hope of peace. They die for those at home and for those with whom they fight. They are doing the best they can to help the people in Iraq because they are brave and good citizens of the United States. They are doing what we hope we would do: carve what good we can from the worst of circumstances. In times when blood is being shed by these brave souls, it is easy for us to forget that those who stand to post and those who stand to protest stand together on the same line of battle. Those who stand to post in Iraq are doing the best they can in terrible circumstances. Those of us here must stand to protest so we can be beside them. Our professional soldiers are not dying for oil, they are dying for our liberty and the hope of liberty in other nations, as they always have, even when the Government is using them for cynical and evil ends, as the Administration of President George Bush is now using them.

If the neoconservatives had been as honest with us on the campaign trail as the neoconservative web site, and we had elected them, and the soldiers had signed up to fight for them, it would be one thing. Instead, these cowards used public relations gimmicks and the most cynical of political operations and methods to get elected. They avoided the truth of their motives at every turn. They are cowards and traitors. Only those of us who can protest can stop them, in the name of our brave soldiers. No Republican or conservative independent I know voted for this Administration or most of the current members of Congress to support the neoconservative agenda. But I now see more and more of my friends of all political positions standing to protest blood shed for treasure even as they cling to the hope of Iraqi liberty. When I ask them whether our soldiers should die so we can take Iraqi oil at any cost, none of them find that a worthy reason. But as each other reason cynically and callously put forward by this cowardly President and his inner circle is stripped away by truth, these same friends are struggling to find a reason that makes sense. Fitfully, reluctantly, they are standing up, because they are Americans first and partisans second.

Saddam Hussein was a pussycat next to North Korea, Sudan, northern Nigeria, northwestern Pakistan and a hundred other places in the world, right now (including China -- remember them?). We are not dying there, in those places. Peak oil is the reason we are dying where we are now. Peak oil is the reason for the urgency. If the Bush Administration loses the midterm elections next year, the Project For A New American Century is doomed. And then the neoconservatives will cynically say the soldiers who died in Iraq died in vain. How dare they? How dare they say, as they slyly imply with imperious swagger, those who died in Vietnam died in vain?

Our soldiers who lay down their lives all die, and have always died, so they can go home and home will still be there. Those who die before they realize that dream make the realization of that goal even more precious to those who make it back. Whether the Government was justified -- and whether we in the United States could not protest strongly enough and persistently enough to stop the Government when it wasn't -- doesn't mar their courage or diminish their service one whit. Bad governments have no courage and lie about their reasons. Good soldiers slog on until they are back home, no matter how bad their leadership and how wrong their Government. That takes real courage. Vietnam taught those of us who lived in those times that lesson. It is time we applied it, as the Powell Doctrine has now been proven because this Government has discarded it and we see the consequences of that mistake.

It is our duty to protest, now and until this Government is thrown from power. Red state, blue state; Republican, independent, Green or Democrat. We are failing our soldiers if we do not make this Government fess up to what they are doing. No matter what reasons now in currency you use to shore up your support, see the forces of history now at work and then look at the cowardice of those who signed the Statement of Purpose, who are now in power and enacting that plan and who slavishly stay "on-message" trying to hide their real purpose from us because they consider us too ignorant and unsophisticated to bother trying to persuade us through open debate.

As they say, "The history of the 20th century should have taught us that it is important to shape circumstances before crises emerge, and to meet threats before they become dire." These people who wrote those words, now in power, make clear they will not wait for their fellow citizens to agree -- they will force changes they believe need to happen and use our soldiers to do it, no matter what. As they misunderstood in Iraq when they assumed we would be greeted with gratefulness once Saddam was overthrown, they misunderstand the gratitude they think they will garner from us once they have killed our children, friends and neighbors for oil.

If the neoconservatives are not wrong about us being little children who will love them after they shed this blood of ours for their own purposes without being honest about it, then our own liberty and the whole dream of America is already dead. Stand to protest. Take them from power. They are not fit to lead this nation in the 21st century. Any other course at this juncture defies the reason every American solider has ever died -- because in America no one goes out and conquers the world without being honest about doing it; no one sheds our blood and secures our treasure for us without telling us that is the strategy; and no one treats their fellow citizens like children while they preen themselves as being so wise and "adult". We are not sheep to be ignored or coddled. We are citizens of the United States of America, and we deserve the truth said full out, looking us in the eye as it is told. If we cannot be made to agree through reason and argument, then this nation does not move an inch, or it is not our nation any longer.

Stand beside our troops now because the battle is engaged. It is our most sacred of duties to stand with them on the front lines of liberty where is it now most at risk -- the soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan trying to help people around them as they can and us in defiance of a Government who no longer respects us as fellow citizens. If we allow this tyranny to stand here, in America, then our soldiers will never be able to come home again, because that home they dream of every night and pray to see again will be gone forever. And then everyone who hates us for our liberty will win, thanks to the neoconservatives who betrayed us from within.

The day we all knew would one day come has arrived, and we must now rise to the challenge of an economy without petroleum, and we must do it immediately. To say we cannot and must kill anyone between us and the remaining oil in the world is not an American attitude. We can do anything, as long as we do it together. Killing other people for oil is no justification for shedding blood, and the neoconservatives know it. They fear the truth breaking free and exposing their perfidy and depravity stripped naked for all to see. And so they should, because Americans will not stand for such a cynical foreign policy.

Strip them of power. Refuse their leadership. Begin the real 21st century project: living together in peace without having our blood shed for oil. That we can do, with sacrifice and with pride. All we need is to be honestly apprised of the truth and to be led by those who do not look upon their fellow citizens as sheep to be sacrificed to the gods of oil. All this Government's other evasions and lies have been shown to be so. We need wait no longer, nor give them any more time. They are fools and knaves -- and they must not stand for us before the world any longer. This century's clock is ticking. The rest of the world is watching and already believes the dream that is America is dying.

Let's prove the other nations wrong, once again. Let's prove the neoconservative snobs wrong forever. Now that would be a real victory. That would be the kind of victory our soldiers always die for, not the hollow one now spouting from the desperate and pitiful mouths of our Government officials. Stand up for America. Stand up for a progressive vision of the world in the 21st century, not a cynical vision based on looking back into the last century. Stand to protest and thus stand beside those who now stand to post. Our liberty is at stake, right here and right now. It is, and always has been, the only thing worth fighting and dying for.

The real battle is not in the Middle East, it is right here at home. If we do not win this one for our troops, if we allow the home for which they slog through the endless torture of their daily lives right now to slip away, then they, and our children, will remember us as the ones who could have acted, but did not. You may be willing to wait and see what happens, but if you do then don't be surprised to see the end of liberty all around you because you didn't stand up to a Government gone mad. Your fellow citizens already standing to protest and your soldiers already struggling to live through another day in the midst of chaos and violence await you on the front lines.

Don't be late.
