Colleges are SO Impersonal

Now that I'm ready to go off to college in the fall I am experiencing another breakdown and I doubt I am going through this by myself. Should I take everything and the kitchen sink? What items are the schools furnishing students with? What items did other students feel necessary their freshman year?

When you surf a prospective college's housing site they will offer you the usual "twin mattress, closet, desk, chair, small chest, etc." I think that they should also offer advice from past 1st year students. Did they find having an ironing board useful? Should they have brought a mini fridge to store some foods? Would a collapsible laundry basket made life easier? But no, these schools are perfect at being impersonal and offering only the smallest sense of comfort: bring your own towels, bedding, and pillow. These schools will save their future freshmen a headache wondering what they should take their first year if they gave current students the chance to tell the future class what might help make college life easier. And who wouldn't want to know how to make their life simpler?

I guess I would say to take what you think you need. A place to put dirty cloths would probably be a good idea. As far as a mini frige goes, bring one if you think that you will use it. It's not easy for upper classmen to say what they think that some one else would need. If you think that bringing an item will make your life easier and if it is small, than bring it.

with a list of things we might need (from reminders about music and movies, to towels and bedsheets, to deciding which roommate will bring the landline phone and which will bring the TV). They also provide us with a microwave and mini fridge (you share with your roomie, unless you live in a single). I think colleges have to be impersonal to a certain extent. I'd hate to have to bring my own furniture n stuff.

Well at my school, we had a list of what to bring and what not to bring. You need a dirty clothes basket, we had micro fridges in our room, we had to bring toiletries because of the type of dorm I stay in. Just bring whatever you think you will need and if you don't need it, then send it back with your parents. You'll get through it. Good lUck!
