What is it that makes your state special? Honestly.

I personally just moved to Washington State with my family because of my dad's job. So here I am, over 3000 miles from where I have spent over 16 years of my life. That might not be such a long time in the course of human events, but for me, it is my entire life. I'm southern born and bred. I don't have an accent, and I'm certainly not a redneck. I do listen to country (don't knock it until you've listened to one of the good songs). I miss having a Walmart around the corner, being close to a Sam's Club. Heck, I even miss Kroger and Publix.

In Washington, the stores run more to Safeway, QFC, Albertsons, and Fred Meyer. As the cost of living is higher, everything is more expensive, including canned soup which goes for over a dollar here when I'm used to the price being more along the lines of 44 cents. <br>I find myself wondering just what it is that makes Washington State so special. Sure, Microsoft and Boeing are here. Why did those two corporations choose to place their headquarters in the only state in the Union with a temperate rainforest? Mind you, I actually count that as a plus for the state.

What is it that makes Washington so special? Which leads to the question, why is any state special really. There are thousands of people attached to each state, or the states would simply be unpopulated. So why do we attach special meaning to one place? Students when they graduate are far less likely to attend schools out of state than in. As a result, their first jobs will also be in-state, or at most a state or two a way.

So why?
