Censorship in schools

Tagged:  •

Ok here is where we really get into it. Censorship of the art world. Because if it isn't acceptible to those with the power than NO ONE should be able to see it. Heaven forbid you look away if it offends you. My High School for example. We are having a gallery showing on friday and with my art being so "out there" I am not ALLOWED to be in the gallery. First you must really know why though.

See I am an out Gay boy and as such I bring gay themes to my work and that can get a little risky. My newest work has been centered around couples... and while I have done works with straight couples as well my work is a series. and as such needs to be show togeather but I cannot do that. And it isn't like my figures are naked they are in there underwear and not a thong or a G-string or anything just plain simple boy shorts and trunks. But no that would offend to many people according to school admin. so therefor I am not allowed to show my work in the gallery with the rest of my friends from my AP art class. Not because I have done anything wrong but because of what I draw. I mean I can understand censorship I may not like it but I can understand it but when they aren't showing any private parts what is the harm?

Unless you go to a private school, your administration should not be able to censor you in such a way. Although s/he has some control over what may be displayed in a school related forum, the fact is that in most states GLBT rights are protected in a public school setting, meaning that any restrictions he has on your work may not be GLBT related by rather applicable to any theme [as in the case of nudity]. If your characters are fully clothed and not lewdly portrayed, you should check into the legal restrictions and school documents [if your school has a GSA or other GLBT related club they should have the applicable information] and present them to your principal. My advice would be not to offend or be rude with your principal, but calmly request that you be able to show your work. The fact is, "protecting" students from seeing pictures of gay couples will only cause more prejudice or fear than if they saw these pictures in a gallery showing at a school related event.
I'm interested to know what comes of this! Good luck!!!
