The S word

SLUT... its one of those four letter words that seems to be glamorized these days. As I walk through the halls at my highschool I can hear girls calling out to there friends "Hey Slut". It really makes me wonder if these girls really know what the word slut means.

SLUT:  1. a dirty untidy woman

          2. A person, especially a woman, considered sexually promiscuous.

          3. A woman prostitute

Now, when you read the deffiniton of these words dont you get a negitive connotation? I know I do. But today, so many girls use this word to mean a good thing. At a time when women are more powerful and strong than ever... the words slut and b**ch are so common. Why would a girl want to be called a slut? Some girls even say it about themselves.

And then theres the word pimp. We all know what a pimp is. Thats what boys want to be called these days. The other day I was walking past a group of middle school kids, and a boy who was about 13 stepped out of a group of girls and asked me if he "looked pimpen" in his sunglasses, and the girls all seemed to agree that he did. If he were really a pimp, then why would any self respecting girl be with them? Its sad that these words are so casually thrown around... I know that Im not a slut... and my boyfriend deffiently isnt a pimp!

I've never understood why all the girls do that. what's the point? I just doesn't make any sense to me at all. And I know some people say words are just words but still... they can still hurt and are still meant to put people down.

I think girls like being coined a slut because they are proud of getting action.
I think they think getting so many guys is a good thing.
haha just in my opinion.

Exactly. Many girls who call themselves that want to make it known that they get some and show it off to others who don't. It's a way of feeling "cool" at that age. Same as with pimp for the guys.

The word "ho." My friends constantly say "Hey ho!" in the halls. Who really wants to be called that?

Girls have taken possession of the word and use it to reduce its impact on girls in general, at least, that's the theory. It is not unlike the use of the "N" word by African-Americans. You assume control of the word and it loses its negative connotation, at least within the group it is directed towards.

The reality is that, just about every girl is called a slut by someone or some group at some point in their lives. And it hurts if you let it. If you use the word to refer to yourself, it loses its ability to have a negative impact on you.

I don't believe in the negative concept of "slut" - I think you should manage your own sexuality and not give a flip what anyone else thinks of it - good or bad.

You've got a point there. When I was younger, I got teased a lot for being a little bigger than most people. So what do I do? I start cracking fat jokes about myself, and taking people's insults as compliments. Pretty soon, they get bored and move on to someone that they can actually hurt.

I love how you say any self-respecting girl, and I think that is what alot of girls are missing these days. Self-respect. PRAY!
