Who says you need to understand it to love it?

About 3 days ago, I was introduced to one of the most unique singers I've ever heard, on youtube of course. His name is Vitas and he is a Russian 'pop' singer... But he isn't what would normally come to mind when you thing of a 'pop' singer... He can reach notes that most GIRLS can't even reach.... He either made is own version of Lucia di Lammermoorr (il dolce suono), most notably used in the movie The Fifth Element, the blue alien opera diva, or it was he that originally created the song... angelic voice he has... He has even shattered a chandelier with his voice... But I don't know a single word in Russian... I'm completely mystified by his voice.... The words seem entirely insignificant compared to that voice.... At first, it does seem odd that he can sing like he does... I can't deny that at times, he does sound like a girl, but he has so much talent, that that doesn't even matter to me... Some people think it's weird and don't try to see past how unusual his style is, so they cannot truly appreciate his overwhelming talent....

Also quite a while back, my sister wanted to listen to 'belly-dancing' music ( as she called it haha ) and found a Turkish Bulgarian singer called Reyhan, who passed away in a car crash at the age of 19. She sang in a middle-eastern language, and for all we know she could have been singing about how her boyfriend was cheating on her... or something I'm not really interested in... but the style was different; interesting, and while at first it seemed... odd... something I wouldn't like to listen to very much, but after I got used to it, I found I really do like it, or at least, the music from her.

There are also countless Japanese bands that, yet again, I cannot understand, but sound enjoyable.... Yoko Kanno, Maaya Sakamoto, Hearts Grow, and others, while at first not being what I'm used to, ended up being some of the moved beloved songs that I have knowlegde of... They grew on me... crept into the crevices of my brain, without me realizing it, and before I knew it I was in love with the songs!

There is even this one band, Gogol Bordello, that's from New York, whose style is unlike anything I'd encountered made it's way into my list of songs I found amazing! They sometimes sing in English and other times sing in a language I can't even recognize, though it is said they have Gypsy influences in their music. I don't understand it at all... I don't know if I ever will, but I know I love the way they used their instruments..

Granted it's easier to like foreign music that is similar to your tastes, Like the German band Rammstein, or Japanese rock and techno bands such as MAXIMUM THE HORMONE, and Aural Vampire, once you explore the world of music with an open mind, without the need to understand what the words are, connections to wordly music are limitless....

Vitas has such an amazing voice. Who cares if he sounds like a girl; his operatic songs are magnificent! The thing with foreign music is that you don't pay attention to their words, but rather the style of songs, the melodies, beats, etc.

Also, I never got around to listenting to Gogol Bordello. Guess they're the band that incorporates the Gypsy influence.

I know right? I found out about him on like 4 days ago, and still can't stop listening to him... or thinking about his songs whenever I can't listen to him. ^^; > 3>;;
Yeah... and over time, you appreciate them more and more ( or at least I do xD )

Yeah, they're the Gypsy inspired band ;D You should listen to the 'Start Wearing Purple' song ^^ it's awesome ;D! There is some English in it, but there is also some other language I don't know mixed in there. x]

WOW Vitas is amazing I never thought I could like to listen to a guy that could go that high. His voice is amazing!

He can go even higher... to the point where he doesn't even sound human anymore... like a dolphin or something.... but it's still so awesome....

Vistas has such a hauntingly beautiful voice...
I'm envious. XD

And Reyhan's style is right up my alley. ^_^
Totally awesome.

Now, I listen to a LOT of Japanese music...mostly anime theme songs.
I have not heard that particular song by Hearts Grow, but...I KNOW one of their songs had to have been used as an anime theme. I recognize the style and vocals! SQUEE!

Gogol Bordello...
I didn't particualerly like that song, but it wasn't bad. I think I could learn to love them is I tried. XD

ANd Rammstein...sadly, I don't care much for that type of music.

But I know what you mean about foreign music. It's so awesome to be able to appreciate music just for the music! And thanks for adding the videos...I've got some new favorite artists to look up! XD

Har har. Vitas looked pretty weird in "Blessed Guru" but I love the song. His deep voice kinda reminded me of Type O Negative's song, "Christian Woman". Go check it out.

You know, Vitas' music have just the kind of essence music in our generation needs, don't you think so? I mean, his dedication song even gave me goosebumps and that doesn't happen often. When you get goosebumps while listening to a song, you know it's damn good. :)

Long live Vitas the musical prodigy! :)
