Being A Senior Sucks...
We all just want to have fun, go out, get to know our friends a little bit more before parting for college.
Why does no one tell us about all of the rediculous work that is put into paying for college? I'm sure they try. We have stuff at school at the begining of the year to make us aware of college costs, and about applying for scholarships, and schools, and how to ask politely for recommendation letters.
However, senior year goes fast. It's already April, and by now, I have chosen my major, my school, and been on a college visit. The FAFSA is done, and the CSS or what ever that thing was on collegeboard. I've gained my Financial Aid rewards. And I'm still short.
About $12 Grand.
That's a big number, and it sucks getting the short end of the stick.
I'm in Iowa. We financially live okay. Not too bad.
My major is Screenwriting. My school, in California.
Yea -- Tuition is just short of $50 grand a year.
Schools with screenwriting majors in the U.S. -- 22
Financial aid given to me -- not quite enough.
Now scholarships... This is where the fun starts.
At school, there are plenty of community scholarships, roughly giving away say $100-300 bucks... The majority of these scholarships want from me... A transcript. A list of my school / community / volunteer activities. An Essay. Two letters of recomendation. To somehow be related into their organization. Most often must be attending an instate college. and the list goes on.
That is a crazy amount of work for $200. It's rediclous.
Online Scholarships, though easier, are just as rediclous. Fastweb, it gives a person options, however, it's also filled with a ton of spam. I'm I'm looking for scholarships, its obvious I need money for a school, please don't throw schools in my face and ask me if I want more information.
Not to mention, they send me e-mails about these scholarships for college students to apply for.... I'm not in college, yet. That's my goal.
The one other thing I dislike about these online applications is the drop down major selector. They completly cut me short of gaining cash for college. I am a screenwriting major, therefor I should be able to apply for film related scholarships -- Right?
Apparently not. I don't even get a chance to type in my major and plea my case.
That's pretty much all I have to say. I haven't got a point. The only advice I have for Juniors or Sophomores, start applying now. Get your ACTs or SATs out of the way. And re-take them. Because it sucks when you find your dream school and cant attend because it's too expensive.

You are a Senior in Highschool right? I'm a 17 yr old single mother and a freshman in college. It was one of the most impossible things to do when I began applying for colleges, I have had almost no highschool experience and no time to participate in college exta-curricular activities. Try to apply for college with that resume. I don't mean to cut myself short I have plenty of volunteer experience, but that isn't everything that they look for.
When you're applying for colleges use the same material that you used for the last one, it really isn't that hard, I have applied for 37 scholorships today alone. And believe it or not but I am at a college right now, and I'm looking for a new one. The college information is great for me to have. I'm sorry it doesn't work for you, but maybe you should find a different website. And when you are in college those scholorships made for college students are a miracle beyond belief.
I guess all I'm trying to say is think about how things may benifit other people before you begin bashing them.
Wow... I don't know how you do that. 17 in college and a single mother. I'm happy for you and what you've accomplished, it's amazing.
I'm not bashing anything. Yes there are scholarships out there for other people, and that's cool. Scholarships for college students is a very good idea.
The only problem is, since I have unique dreams, scholarships that look promising to apply for, always have small print somewhere that says I am not applicable.
I'm glad these internet scholarship sites work for you, but, unfortunatnly all they ever send me is crap I can't apply for because I am not already in college, or my major is not included in the lather. And once I finally do find one to apply for, the spam in my inbox goes up 10 fold.
<<< KAT >>>
Fastweb sucks... I highly suggest you do a google search for general scholarships, or for scholarships for aspiring screenwriters. You'll probably get more applicable information.

It led me here too, and I'm eternally grateful for all the other members it has led here. But the chances of winning a scholarship from fastweb (even this one) are very little, since they are given out to so many people. Of course, not everyone who uses fastweb is very smart, since we still get people e-mailing us with requests to apply for our scholarship...

I agree with you, armysaari. Nobody should complain about recieving hundreds of dollars in free money from complete strangers. I was in a situation similar to yours, and I was never so ungrateful that I would gripe about the amount of the scholarship or not getting more money. I was just glad to have ANYTHING to apply to my college costs. I'm sure that the people who awarded the scholarships would be very disappointed if they read this.
