I make just little over minimum wage right now, and love my job, however I Don’t have insurance, I don’t always have enough money for the things I need such as food. I make my pennies stretch. So one day I decided to check out getting state assistance just temporarily till I got my finances in order. Maybe a month or two. I went online checked out states requirements, seen that I qualified for what I wanted to apply for, filled out all the online forms, got everything submitted, and was told congrats, and to make an appointment to see a caseworker on getting everything started.
Meanwhile out of all the forms I filled out none of them asked me for my race, I mean I filled out tons of stuff. Well I got to the office and I was the only White person there, which I was ok with because I am definitely not racist. I sat there and there must have been 100 people in the waiting room 50/50 black and Latino. Everyone was looking at me like omg there a white person here. Well it was my turn to go up to the office and I got there and the social worker asked me was I in the right place? I was like as far as I know. Before she even looked at my file she was like I cant help you. I asked her why and she wouldn’t say. I told her my circumstances, I asked her to read my file, told her I preqalifed online and that I was being treated unfairly. She still wouldn’t help me. So that’s when I asked her, if I was black or Latino and smoked crack and had little babies on my hips and at my ankles could I get help, Could I get help if I quit my job and wanted to stay at home the rest of my life? I told her how I worked, how I was trying to go to college and how the bills were to much and I needed jut a little extra help to get me over this hump. She laughed at me told me she didn’t make me white God did, so get a second job. And she closed the door.
What kind of world do we live in? Its 2008 and people are still judging by skin color? Those who work and are trying to keep afloat cant get help, however if your a baby popping machine and a druggie you can get free housing, food and health insurance! It makes no sense to me!
