We've all seen the movies with the ships hoisting up the old skull and bones and lots of "arghs" and "avasts" to last any evening. Errol Flynn, Douglas Fairbanks Jr, the characters of Long John Silver, Captain Barbosa and Jack Sparrow all call up our childhood imaginings of hordes of treasure and adventure on the high seas. There are the historical pirates: Black Beard, Black Bart, Captain William Kidd, Captain Henry Morgan, and Sir Francis Drake.
In honor of Talk Like A Pirate Day, I thought I'd write on the topic of booty. Not the shaking kind, thanks. What do you consider good booty? I like it when I get a "steal" in a bargain shop, thrift store, or yard sale. I also love it when I get free things that I need. (Notice the need distinction.) I got some free pens and Scrapbook paper today, since someone was going to get rid of them. The best booty is always books for me. Books are my highest material treasure. If I can go scouting through a book store with a good idea for a find, I love to be able to do that. I especially love the smell of older books and the texture of their bindings. I love the poet Richard Braughtigan.
Of course, we're seeing pirates all over the news lately. The pirates of Wall Street had some good pickings lately. The waters aren't clear yet...
I can't leave a good pirate post without listing my favorite pirate references. My favorite pirate movie is Captain Blood with Errol Flynn. I'd list my favorite pirate book by Robert Louis Stevenson "Treasure Island." My favorite game comes with a bias since my husband and I designed it, the game Plunder printed by Laughing Pan Productions. My favorite computer pirate game is SId Meir's Pirates. My favorite pirate outfit is my husband's, see the picture!

arrrrg I'm still torn between being a pirate and a ninja.
I know the hatred runs deep so I guess I should choose at some point of time...

You should be a ninja pirate! Then you can tell the world you are the product of a forbidden love affair. It adds romance to the thing!
That's what Kaia was for his second Halloween (albeit without the entire forbidden love affair bit). He had his ninja costume... and his eye patch and his booty (not the shaking kind). It was quite brilliant. He still wears the costume... only he wears it with swimming goggles three sizes too big now. Not nearly as pirate-y (or ninja-y either for that matter), but funny as shit.

Now that is picture worthy. I have a picture of my son when he was two with goggles, fast asleep in bed. Love it.

Pirates have cooler clothes. Though ninjas have nice weapons. I think the pirates win, if nothing else because also have cool transportation

Do I detect some Floridian pirate bias?
