Voting and choices

Is it not funny that everyone tells you that your vote count and to vote? But what they don't tell you is that you must think about why you are voting. And this my friend is very difficult to do. I say that because eveyone's issues are different. You have to vote for the issue that you are most passionate about and not the person. The problem today is that all of your issues may be divided between polititions. For example: You don't like abortion and you want low taxes. A polition may want higher taxes and disaproves abortions. So which one do you chose?
Today it is not just republican versus democrate- it is about that one issue that you want immediately changed. People today tell these younger people to vote but do not tell them what to look for. They say that you can make a difference but not to think about what you want changed. And that is why this get screwed over or lots of people just don't vote at all. So many problems but who do you vote for to help resolve the problem. Quick question- how many of you voted and what was your biggest issue?

I totally agree with you. The party system we have forces people into a political cubby hole- when you vote for a Republican, you have to accept all of their issues, even if you disagree with a few of them. For instance, someone who is pro-life, but also anti-death penalty (like myself) has to choose between voting for a Republican (the pro-lifers) or a Democrat (anti-death penalty).

And I agree with you some more... people should not vote "just because." You should only vote if you actually understand the candidates and their positions, and do a little research of your own. Otherwise, we will have people who know nothing about a candidate vote for him or her, and that is not healthy for democracy.

As for me, I had to prioritize my issues. I figure the casualties from abortion are far greater than the casualties from execution, so I'm a newly registered Republican (and shockingly, I'm only 18) and I'm supporting John McCain. I live in Pennsylvania but can't vote in the primary April 22 because only the Democrats are running, so unfortunately I'll just have to wait until November.

It makes me happy to know that you, being so young, understand what it is to be an American. Even adults don't fully understand and turn into "fanatics" about one person.
