Can anyone here honestly tell me they know about the time that bands such as The Plain White Tees, Fall Out Boy, and Gym Class Heros started? I bet not many of you can. Well, to answer this question, The Plain White Tees' and Fall Out Boy started in 2001, and Gym Class Heros came out in 1997. However, ever since radio stations like Z100 and TV Stations like MTV started overplaying songs like "Hey There Delilah", "Thanks for the Memories", and "Cupid's Chokehold", these bands have completely sold out. Other bands guilty of this is Head Automatica, Cute Is What We Aim For, and The Academy Is.... I've even seen Rilo Kiley on the MySpace Music page a few times. For all of you who have been fans of these bands since the beginning, or at least like more than just the popular songs, good for you. But for all the fans who call these bands your "favorite" just because you hear their most popular song on Z100 or their best video on MTV everyday, be unique and find your own bands, don't just like bands because the "in crowd" at your school likes them. Next thing I know I'm going to turn on the radio and hear bands like The Receiving End of Sirens and Four Letter Lie.

Haha. I totally understand what you mean because liking bands that are popular. But what do you mean by sold out actually? I don't understand it in this context. Is selling out a good thing or a bad thing? For some reason, I begin to dislike certain bands when they become too famous. I don't know why! Why is that?

okay your right that was a little confusing...
by selling out i mean it definitly as a bad thing.
like they give radio stations the rights to their songs and the next thing you know they've changed so much and lost all their personality
and i think when bands we like become popular we don't like them as much because we want to be unique and we don't like how people seem to know only one or two of their most popular songs and then claim them as their favorite bands.
I do too, about Franz Ferdinand....but anyone. I don't really think it's selling out. For bands to get out in the world and to keep doing it, they have to eat. I know when Fall Out Boy was relatively unknown the lead singer had to eat ketchup and crackers and was behind on his rent. As any kind of artist, music or whatever, you need money to keep going. It is annoying, though.
I've been a fan of Plain White Tee's since 2001. I was a fan of Fall Out Boy, beginning in 2001, but I'm not really any more. But I've never really been a fan of Gym Class Heroes...
At one point I thought the same way you do, that MTV and the radio were in a way corruption the bands that I loved. I got mad when someone loved "FOB!!!!!!" but couldn't recite one of their song names. But then I realized something. If I love the band then why am I upset that they're expanding their audience and making money? While I was still annoyed, I became a bit more zen about it all.
Gaining more listeners isn't necesarially selling out...
I owned their first album...way back when it came out. Imagine my surprise when Hey There Delilah started playing on my radio station. I was quite confused that a 2001 song was just now being released. Then I found out they had released a new CD.

what else bothers me is that when Hey There Delilah started playing on the radio everyone was like "oh my god did you hear that new song by the band The Plain White Tees???" and I'm just like no that's been out for like 5 years.
