In Your Head

So, now that I am aware of the fact that I have made 3 'newbie' mistakes in my first post alone ( I wonder what the record is), I am hoping to redeem myself and talk about a topic that a few other people may have pondered about.
This weekend I am up at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo; this was my dream school, but things just didn't work out the way I thought they would. My post is not about Cal Poly, but about part of the interesting conversation my two friends and I had on the way up here. There is just something about road trips, isn't there?
As I previously stated, my boyfriend is from Brazil. The language spoken there is Portuguese. I took 4 years of Spanish in high school and for my first year in college I decided to take a Portuguese class; what a beautiful language. We were talking about how we want our kids to be bilingual and things of the sort. I asked him what his first language was which led him to telling me stories about him and his friends back when he lived in Brazil. He told me Portuguese was his main language when he lived in Brazil, obviously. He told me his thoughts were in Portuguese, his dreams were in Portuguese, his life was in Brazil. What about the present? He now thinks and dreams in English.
Thinking about actually becoming a part of another culture fascinates me; to actually have thoughts and dreams in different languages throughout a single life span, wow. As I was discussing this with my two fellow passengers on our 5 hour trip up to SLO my friend Sam threw in an interesting thought:
There are people in this world who have never heard a human voice clearly before because they are deaf. They don't know how and have never heard clear formations of consonants, syllables or sentences before. Most of these people use American Sign Language to communicate with the world around them. If they have never actually heard words before, what do the think in their head? Do they think of signing? When they dream and they are communicating with others in their dream is all of their communicating through sign as well? It really made me think and I thought it was an interesting point; something to think about or ponder...
I hope that perhaps this post was slightly more "appropriate" and thought provoking as well as more in accordance with ProgressiveU. That's all I got for today.
