Don't call me a CHICK!

Tagged:

I want to know who invented the term "chicks" for females. I hate being called a chick and hate it when other people use that word to refer to girls. I think chicks (i.e. baby chickens) are cute, but why are the females named after animals? I guess its considered a cute nickname but I haven't heard guys being called names that are similar to animal names. I guess one could use the word "cocks" (i.e. roosters) but that would get snickers.

I understand the other word for donkey to be used for both genders, or calling someone a "pig", but I think it is quite inferior to call females, "chicks". I know this word has been in people's vocabulary for decades. I do understand that this word is so commonly used that most girls don't really find it offensive. I mean I agree I sometimes don't think about it or feel offended by people using it. Yet, I rather be called by my name than being called a "chick".

Chick is an incredibly offensive term. It's degrading. I'm glad you're not one of the girls who buys in to the "well he doesn't really mean anything by it..." There's history to that word, just as there is to any slang term.

Anyone, there's some history tied to it. I wrote about "Chick Lit" in my blog - basically, chick is referring to chickens or Chiclet gum. So, when we're called chicks, we're being called a group of baby chickens (are then later slaughtered), or a stick of gum. Awesome.

I agree, many people have begun to stand up to labels, but some seemingly 'harmless' labels and nick names have gone unchallenged. Not many see the harm in refering to females as 'chicks', but not denying this one creates a double standard.

Either we abolish [or at least refuse respones to] all labels, or we accept them all. It's not a pick and chose, because we would never all agree.

As for myself, I don't appreciate the term and I no longer answer to it. I'm glad you picked up on this oddity our society uses. Good for you!

Finally! I hate when people call girls chicks! It makes me feel low. Like I should be on a farm living in a barn or something.

They could be calling us c*nts or sluts or bitches.

Personally, I have no problem with being called a chick, and I use the term myself.

Guys are sometimes called "studs". Not only is it the name of something used in frame construction, but it's also a name for a male breeding animal.

Cute&fluffy, or only good for sex/holding the wall up? haha.
