The only reason evolution still holds the nomen of the "Theory of Evolution" is simply THIS. Evolution is, and has been, a hotbed of disagreement. You take religious enthusiasts and scientific enthusiasts and set them together; of course, trouble follows. Most of the trouble, however, stems from the fact that neither side knows enough about the other. Research is the key to science; if creationists wish to debate in the scientific world, then research should become part of their standardized vocabulary.
Furthermore, creationists, or persons who term themselves such, should read up on THEIR philosophy. "Creationists" believe in the literal account of the Creation in the Bible; therefore, those who are attempting to mix the two, while still naming themselves Creationists are quite off-base. Another tenet of the Creationist belief is that which is based on the postulation by James Ussher that the world (universe) was created on the night that preceeded October 23, 4004 BCE. This is completely ludicrous, but most so-called Creationists know nothing of it.
My belief is that a religions class ought to be OFFERED by public school as a brach of social science, but that the mention of Creationism, Intelligent Design or any other name which will or has surfaced shall remain out of the Biology curriculum. The "theory" of Evolution is a scientific theory, Creationism is not. Besides, the State CANNOT support a curriculum that is influenced by the Church (seperation of church and state people).

Hm, I wouldn't go so far as to group all creationists together...
There are several creationist view of how life began - and most have nothing to do with the Bible.
Let's remember, Christians all together only make up like 35% of the world's population. That leaves room for a whole lot of religions.
But I do agree with you, if intelligent design is offered, it should be offered as a social science class - since most religions affect a society deeply. There's a reason why social science and physical science (and the ump-teen other sciences out there) cover completely different areas.
But, if they're going to cover one creationist theory - they should cover them all, and I don't think there's time enough for that :)
