Today I was thinking about the education that I am receiving and I tried to compare it to that which my parents received. It is certain that there is vastly more information today to learn, but through personal experience and observation of my peers, I feel that students today don't really learn as much as our parents and grandparents did due to the amount of distraction we have today. I know that every so often I get so inspired to walk into a classroom and absorb everything the professor says and apply it to my life in order to truely learn the material. However, after a long day of class and/or work when it is homework time, I find myself flipping through the channels on TV, shuffling through my iTunes, or stalking people on Facebook. Once I've exhausted these outlets, I'm ready for a nap or bed and homework takes the back shelf in my mind.
When earlier generations were at university, there were no cell phones or interned. There was no Facebook or MySpace. Sure there were social functions and the opportunity to 'go out', but I feel like our parents, etc. spent more time on their studies. There weren't as many subjects to learn about what with all the developments in the medical, technology, and business fields and there were less people in school so these fields were less competitive, it just seems to me that earlier generations did a better job with their time management and so were able to gain more from classes.
What do you think?
