Ok. So maybe it's already two weeks into the New Year. But I'm afraid that if I don't share my resolution, that if I don't put it down somewhere for posterity (well, I suppose the site could always crash and that would be tragic) that I am likely to break it.
Anyway, I read online a story about a group of people in San Francisco who believed that consumerism was taking over our everyday lives. I can see that. I can see how consumerism or materialism does cloud people's visions towards some of the nicer things in life. I can appreciate this. Well, these people made the resolution last year that they were not going to buy anything brand-new unless it was health related - food, toothbrushes, personal hygiene products, socks, underwear, etc. If they needed something, they were going to buy it used either online or in the community like at a tag-sale or thrift store. I love that idea! They gave themselves a few weeks to stock up on some things that they needed to buy brand new before they started off this project.
Now there's a yahoo group with over 3,000 people in it.
So I want to do kind of the same thing. There are some things that I will need to buy brand-new because I am renovating my room. But for the most part, if I truly think about it, I have to admit that aside from the health essentials, I really don't *need* to buy anything brand-new. I don't need to shell out tons of money for clothes that will go out of style. Lord knows I have tons of clothes that I don't even wear and that need to be donated or given away. Why do I need to spend my hard-earned money on materialistic things?
I can do this. I have no qualms about wearing second-hand clothes, about waiting longer to read books or watch movies until I can buy them used online. The only snag I may run into, in addition to the whole room renovation thing is that I will need to buy books for college and soon.
So yeah, I'm gonna go for it! Hopefully it will teach me some valuable determination and other strong qualities for my life. :) I can't wait!
My New Year's resolution

That has to be the best idea for a resolution ever. I know I would like to say that I would want to join in on this, but I would just give in. I would have the hardest time wearing used clothes. I know that sounds horrible, but I like being the first when it comes to that. I would have no qualms about being used movies or books. But best of luck on keeping this resolution!
I think it is going to be challenging for me, too, but I know that I've found some cute stuff in the thrift stores around here for me to wear. I just wash it all first!
