Recently a new vaccine has been approved by the fda.. The Human papilloma virus can be especially dangerous to women. This virus is capable of causing cancer of the cervix, vulva, vagina, anus or penis. HPV is essentially an STD, but one that can be prevented. Most people will not develop any symptoms and will clear the body of the infection themselves, but there are more then 100 differemt strains of this virus and so it can become harmful. Many people after reading that their body will clearr the infection in many cases do not worry about the consequences HPV has. 50% of sexially active men and women acquire the HPV virus in their life. 80% of women have acquired it by the age 50. The point I am trying to make is, ask your doctor if you can recieve the shot it can only help you . The shot is adminstered 3 times over three months and is relativley painless considering the fact it could save you a lot of pain in the long run. Even if you are not sexually active the time to get it is now! This is because once you have acquired HPV the vaccine may not help it. by recieving the shot before activly having sex reduces your chances of actually getting the STD.

The shot doesn't prevent all strains of HPV, only strains 6, 11, 16 and 18. And the vaccines work best if they are given before one becomes sexually active... even though it can protect an already infected person from contracting another strain of HPV. And HPV doesn't just spread through sexual intercourse.. any contact with infected skin can spread the virus as can vaginal birth.
The vaccine is a good idea though... the thing is it's not going to do a whole lot of good if parents don't take their kids to get the vaccines *before* they even begin to think about sexual activity.
