Why have sites like Facebook and Myspace, become so popular? I am a part of the madness myself. I have both a Facebook and Myspace account, but I really don't like being a part of them. In the last couple of years community sites like Facebook and Myspace have become increasingly popular. Why? What is so appealing about them? I mean we are Friends with our Friends. Why can't we call our friends, write them letters or e-mails, or just get out of our rooms and visit them. Why do we need Facebook? Does it make us feel more powerful sitting in front of a screen venting our feelings at our friends, safe from their anger when we are truthful with them. I myself don't understand the fascination with these sites. What is the importance? What is the reason for them?

Facebook at least blocks the spam that you get through their site. Myspace is increasingly having problems getting rid of the spam that you get. Sometimes though it is not spam that you get, like say from someone adveritising Mary Kay cosmetics but another person might think that is and report it so the profile ends up getting deleted. Another problem on Myspace that is not on Facebook is the increasing number of hackers that hack into people's accounts and change their profile completely to adveritse sex sites. I have had this happen to me once and ended up having to delete that profile because of it. Some of my friends are having the same problem as well. Its not so much that they are becoming increasingly popular, they are to some standards, but most people who create them are seeing how many friends that they can get no matter if they are spam profiles or just regular people trying to find new friends on the world wide web.

Social networking sites allow you to spread news quickly and efficiently to all your friends, without having to call each of them up individually. Yes, it does eliminate some of the face-to-face stuff, but it makes it easier to communicate with people you would otherwise have trouble communicating with. And, of course, there's also the potential of you losing someone's information without the site, and having the information right there can help reduce that.

I agree that we are slowly becoming a population that communicates electronically, whether it be on Facebook, Myspace, of e-mail. My mom is always asking me why I don't just call people up...usually I just say that I Facebooked them and usually that works out.
I mainly use my Facebook to keep in touch with friends that live in other countries. With time differences and busy scheduals it's hard to find time to have a phone conversation.

All the believers, they were smiling and winking at each other, I could honestly say I was scared for my life.
It is also very expensive to make long distance and international calls. Myspace and facebook help to eliminate that barrier.

I got my Facebook as a way to keep in touch with a particular group of friends that I only get to see about once a year. We are all busy, and seeing each other face to face is rarely an option, so Facebook is a convenient way to stay up dated on the day to day stuff (and not so day to day stuff, like when one of the group had her baby and the first I heard about it was on Facebook). We could call or write to each other more, but that usually requires more time and forethought then just updating your status, and it's also easier to share pictures on your page then to send them individually to people.

its the new communicative device. we use the websites to converse with others, either our old friends or our new friends...
