Where Did Sunday Go?
By ladylau - Posted on February 24th, 2008
Ok, so today is Sunday. I woke up early this morning, had breakfast, and started homework that I have put off all vacation long. I've been working on it pretty much all day yet I still have some more to do. So my question is, what happened to my Sunday?
I don't consider doing homework all day a relaxing way to spend my Sunday afternoon. After all, isn't Sunday supposed to be the day of rest? What happened to that!!!! There used to be a time where practically EVERYTHING was closed on Sundays. Families got together for supper, parents had a whole day to spend with the kids, and the kids had no cares in the world...the way it should be. (At least in my opinion)
So why did Sunday leave us all? Ever since our world became more advanced, people have just gotten busier and busier. It seems like nobody ever gets a chance to breathe anymore. I know that it is normal for me, a high school senior, to feel overwhelmed with stress from school, homework, work, and college excitement; however, I often see that a lot of younger children are becoming stressed a lot faster. My 10 year old cousin, for example, goes to school, comes home and does at least an hour to two of hw on a good day, then goes to basketball practice for about two hours. He also has CCD on one of these days, and when he is not playing basketball he is playing baseball. He also plays the guitar, is the president of his class, and does a billion of other things that I do not wish to know about because they simply exhaust me.
I feel bad for all those growing up who aren't going to have any of those old time Sundays. At least I got a few while I was younger. One day a week out of our hectic lives really makes a huge difference. I believe that with at least one day of rest people will become a lot more energized and see a big improvement in their daily tasks.
Well, I must go finish my homework. Hopefully I will finish before Sunday is over. But I just want to say...... I WANT SUNDAYS BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!........ please :)
Sunday left when it wasn't wanted any more. The day of rest has its bases in religion, and christianity. When shops and things were closed on sundays it was because people believed (and some, such as me still believe) that we shouldn't work on sundays. Simply put, it was one of the Ten Commandments. With the rise of atheism, agnosticism, humanism, and all them other 'isms. Recognizing Sunday as a day of rest means to some people that they have to recognize God.
So there's my theological idea in response to the question. As it is, my Sundays are always free. :)
Some people recognize Saturday as the day of rest, and not Sunday. Might have something to do with it as well.

I realize that some people rest on Saturday rather than Sunday, but I am talking about a day of rest in general.
The only reason things were closed on Sundays was because of blue laws, and it being a "day of rest" is pretty much a Christian notion. I'm down with our secular direction of Sunday.
You've written so many blogs in the four days you've been here it's almost scary. ._."
I like that everything is open on Sundays and that people are still busy and doing their daily duties. The idea that Sunday is a day of rest is a religious idea, and with the adaptation of religious freedom, there are losses in general society. We're a busy world. Life can't just stop for a day. :)
I agree that people are too busy now-a-days. But people like ur cousin are dependable because they kno how to handle their time, plus he'll prolly get into an IV League school.
In response tp everyone saying about the day of rest being a chritian veiw. I'm buddhist, and i've read the bible cover to cover, and i don't care if we had a day of rest. I wouldn't be ofended by its religous aspects. I would be thankful that i could take a day to breath.
I agree with all of you on the basis that Sunday being a day of rest is mostly a religious view, but why should that make a difference? Anyone could really use one day to relax, whether they go to church every Sunday or are an atheist. That is where I agree with Paige! I would be thankful to take a day to breathe also.
What's preventing you from taking a day to breathe?
I hate the idea of things being closed on Sundays, but I'm one of those people who will take a break when I need it, regardless of what day it is.

Just because the day of rest is a religious idea does not mean people who are of different religions or aren't religious cannot prabctice it. If everyone allowed themselves one day of rest a week, whether it was Saturday or Sunday (or perhaps Monday, depending on your work schedule) perhaps everyone would be more relaxed and people would have a lower risk of heart attacks and be overall healthier. We take on far too much for our own good. Some people blame others' expectations, but I think a majority of it is our own expectations. No one forced me to participate in philosophy club, eco club, and a sorority while also taking 18 credits. It's what I expect of myself. When I was in a theatre group, I complained that I would be in one play, assistant direct another, and teach drama classes. And yet, that's what I expected myself to be able to do, and soon the director expected me to take that on. It is my own fault for all the stress in my life, and I don't think this is a solitary situation.
