Number 16 Bus Shelter? Are you kidding me? Why would you ever name your child this?
For those of you who may not have heard the story a judge in New Zealand is stepping up to the plate and starting to intervene with parents who name their children horrible and ridiculous names. Now these are not the names that are a little unusual...or spelled really differently or anything. These are the poor children that are named just terrible terrible names. For example: Number 16 Bus Shelter. Better yet? That one got accepted. Ones that were actually denied? "Yeah,Detroit", "Fish and Chips", "Talulah does the hula" oh yeah and of course "Keenan Got Lucy and Sex Fruit". Really? You're actually going to have your child grow up with the word sex being part of their name? That will be a fun childhood. Explain that to a first grade class. See what happens to your poor son or daughter.
Really why? I understand that a lot of parents want to show uniqueness in their children's names...and thats great! But maybe you shoud take a moment to realize that your child and not you is going to have to live with that decision for life. They are the ones who get stuck with your stupid decision. Maybe you should look out for your kid and think about future consequences before you start letting that creativity flow.
Yes, lots of celebrites name their children really unusual things too. But that is not going to make as big of a difference to them probably as it will to 'Regular Joe's' kids. Celebrity children...does their name matter much? No matter how bizarre they will still be referred to as "So and so's kid" by 95% of the world population probably. Plus, since most of these kids are automatically going to inherit more money than God chances are they might not ever need to go on a job interview. However 'Regular Joe's' kids will and let me tell you if somebody came into my business looking for a job with a name like Number 16 Bus Shelter I would have a lot of trouble keeping a straight face...let alone giving them a job.
I couldn't agree more with the writer of the article that was on Yahoos new page....by doing this a parent is setting their child up with a social handicap...for no reason at all. Every one of you who has survived elementary, middle, and high school know how cruel children can be....why give them ammo against your own child?
I am all for having a unique name. Trust me I have thrown around some quirky ones for my imaginary-someday children. However there is a fine like between unique and ridiculous. Why would you want to name your child something that will make them look silly? I'm glad that judge finally stepped in and said enough is enough. Good for him for having the courage to be the first! Thank you. I'm sure the re-named 'Yeah Detroit' and 'Fish and Chips' will thank you someday too.
