what is progress?

Progress, such an elusive term and not as easily defined as you may think. Progress as defined in the Oxford American dictionary is forward or onward movement toward a destination; advance or develop toward a better, more complete, or more modern state. The definition is actually not very concrete. It is sure that progress is a sense of moving forward from one step to another, but the rest is completely contestable and we would have to go on to define more terms and conditions. A better, more complete, or modern state is extremely vague and the meanings of those words I assume are skewed towards a capitalist, western view. I guess when you write the dictionary you choose the most important meaning. So lets move on to something more definable: Progressive. Progressive is defined as happening or developing gradually or in stages; proceeding step by step. Progressive: (of a group, person, or idea) favoring or implementing social reform or new, liberal ideas; favoring or promoting change or innovation. This is who we all are – progressive. Writing about new ideas in favor of change. Changing the world that we know, the world that we see with all its problems and injustices. Progressive ideas are the reason that our world is as you see it today.

Progressives are often defined by the causes they take up. Social justice is a major concern of progressives. Justice for all peoples, but is justice possible in our world? Is it possible for true justice to exist? As one of my friends put it, “I think human nature is far too faulty to achieve actual justice… every decision made is based on individual perceptions. And perceptions are shaped by our individual experience […]” Progress is a difficult concept to deal with especially when talking about justice. As I have stated before I am an idealist. I believe that true justice is attainable because when people share their thoughts and ideas in a forum like this then progress and social justice is possible. When we begin to listen to one another and when we can debate and share our own individual experiences then we will achieve progress. Diversity is key to the success of progress and justice. We need a diversity of people and ideas in order to achieve true justice and end ignorance.

I know from my experience in the world and from this site that progress and progressive thought is well on its way. But let us not forget to not just talk, but act progressively. Actions speak louder than words. Who better to speak through their actions than the progressive youth of today? What is your individual experience with progress?

My individual experience with progress? I wonder if blogging for progress has made me less progressive than I could have been... You're right that it's hard to act progressively when all we do is talk.

You make a very good point. Yes it is great to share ideas and concerns, but if we don't put them into motion, what do we make of all these very educated, well written blogs? I thank you for lighting a fire under my butt :)
