Sometimes I am reminded of the irony of my own life; and I realize that I am truly blessed to be where I'm at. Six/seven years ago, I was a homeless hippy-bum; sleepin' on the streets of Portland, hitchhiking around the country, without a goal in mind, other then maybe hooking up with another hot hippy-bum. I was doing meth up under some bushes by the highway, unhappy with myself and life. Someone noticed me; I don't even remember who now, but some guy pulled me aside one day at the "Peace Camp" where I was staying at the time, a ghetto homeless camp where people where supposedly fighting for homeless rights, but really most of us where just doing the regular homeless thing; drinking, doing drugs, eating whatever came our way. Anyway, this guy pulled me aside and said "I've heard you talking about becoming a midwife..." (I can't remember what I even might have said about becoming a midwife, but anyway,) "well here are a couple of dollars; you go to the library and look up the Birthingway School of Midwifery, then you take this bus and go visit them...you should go to school there..." I didn't really know this guy, but because he'd given me specific instructions and money for the bus, I did what he said. He had seen a glimmer of hope..
