I've been contemplating whether or not to voice my opinions about Marijuana legalization or not? Its always a touchy subject with some people, mainly older. I live in Alaska, where it has gone back and forth to being legal, and illegal, than partially legal, but you could only have a certain amount on you, blah blah blah.
I just want to know..what is the harm in it? Being a non marijuana (pot) smoker, and looking at it from my point of view, there is so many theories about pot, and the only one that I have heard that might make the least bit of sense, is it makes you lazy, and broke.
Its been proven to help with Cancer, and it has been proven that it helps with nausea, with pregnant women. Now that doesn't mean I am saying everyone should go light up, no matter the age, or time. Granted there are consequences with it. My sister smoked, and her grades slipped, most people wont hire if you piss dirty.
I am just trying to understand from the legal point of view. I have heard some theories that the governement cant make taxe cuts off of it, and is therefore not worth legalizing, but how many people do we bust with marijuana, and let them sit in jail for a couple months. Its more money for the government to make it illegal than if they just went ahead and legalized it. I have had a lot of friends tell me that here in Alaska they have gotten caught with a bag, or much more, and the cops never did anything. I wouldn't either, its such a minor drug, that its almost not worth booking them and going through all the hassle, for the few months they get in jail.
I understand that it is a drug, and that alone should be enough. I have never heard any stories about people Over docing, or getting hurt from it. I'm sure their are risks with driving, but their are risks with driving even when you are taking Tylenol. I know this is a blog, and its suppose to be my opinion, but I would really like to hear someone else input on the matter. It doesn't make any sense to me. Maybe someone else can make more sense out of it?

I have a couple of theories. As you said, it benefits the government economically, but it goes deeper than what you explained. This war, like most other wars, creates specific markets. Wars like WW2 helped to get this country out of the depression, so it makes sense that the government could make more money off of it. It creates jobs (the DEA, prison system workers, prison system builders) markets (prison system markets, rehabilitation centers) and because it has been demonized by the government, it indirectly makes alcohol and tobacco better comparatively, which results in more revenue for those markets.
It also is a way for the government to control what we can and can not do. The prohibition in my opinion is a severe breach of freedom. People should be allowed to do whatever substance they want, as that is a personal choice. We need awareness and information about drugs, not propaganda demonizing them. How close is the propaganda towards drugs to the Nazi propaganda against the Jews? The fact that we don't see the similarities is because the jews were human, while drugs are not. If anyone has ever read 1984, this is a parallel to the perpetual war. We can't continually war against a country because our citizens won't stand for that, so the government has to find a suitable scapegoat, and that is drugs. Against a non-human enemy, it is easy to spread propaganda and lies about its supposed "dangers" (and trust me, its not just pot that the government lies about dangers).
This just my theories tho. A lot of people, including X-cops are supporting at least marijuana decriminalization if not legalization. Cocaine, heroin, all those other "hard" drugs are probably never going to be legalized, because the majority of humans are too weak-minded to be able to do those responsibly enough to not get addicted, but still benefit from their positive effects (cough tobacco cough). The prohibition is just the result of racism, classism, and other things that have nothing to do with our health from the early 1900's, and its time we changed. people seem to be afraid of change tho...
i can't give yah legal answers, but i can give you personal experience...
my mom's left hand and parts of her leg are scalded from a fire because she was making popcorn on marijuana... it impaired her judgement--never did it again.
my friend's brother started taking marijuana and since it's a gateway drug, he started getting into more serious stuff. now, he rarelly sees his family because he's been in and out of jail, beat up by pimps, can't hold a job... he's told us how he hates life.
so people say that in and of itself, weed isn't bad. but why step closer to the boundary-line between pot and harder drugs? idk... my state legalizes prescriptions... i think that is okay b/c then u need a dr.'s permission to obtain it. the people who need it get it.
Unfortunately this is one of those tired subjects that pops up almost daily. All the time, the same stuff is repeated. Sorry about the nega-comment, but you'll want to find some unique and interesting topics. Read more blogs and you will find what's been done too much. I suppose I've just been on this site too long...

the problem with pot is that it has so many chemicals in it that is very difficult to study and understand what all the long and short term effects of pot. or at least that is an excuse used many times for governments not to legalize it.
