I just got home from a meeting with my little (sister) at her school, we painted, sculpted clay, talked about animals. This is the most rewarding volunteer task that I have taken on. I think everyone should be apart of this program.
Especailly men. Big Brother Big Sister(BBBS) informed me that in most cases they do not have enough men that volunteer for the amount of little's that want to be paired with a male. There are many little boys and girls that would benefit from a mentor. They do better in school and excell in things like painting and sculpting the things the volunteers do with the little's. I stayed and helped the students during their math class and the teacher was more than happy to have a helper. Small 1 hr visits make a huge difference in the eyes of a child. They really look up to thier Big's, and look forward to the visits.
There are two different kinds of visits that a person can volunteer for: School Based , Community Based. School based simply means that you only meet at the school during the regular school year(normally at recess or lunch) Community based means that the childs parents have given permission to let the child go out and about with the volunteer. There are many tests to become a Big , such as background checks, any police records and things like that. The process is not very fast either I waited almost 2 1/2 months until BBBS found a match for me.

I've often thought that the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program sounded like a good way to volunteer for something meaningful and nice. How long have you been a volunteer?
