The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe...its biblical references.

The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe...A very famous book written by C. S. Lewis is well known throughout the world.  I had always thought that it was just a fantasy book, but really, C. S. Lewis used the magical world of Narnia to express his religious belief.

The Lion in the story symbolizes God, whereas a Lion is the "King" of the Jungle, God is the King of the World and Universe.  The Witch is the Devil, performing evil and going against what God says, trying to persuade people into his (or her, as in the story) doing bad deeds.  The Wardrobe also symbolizes the human's sinful nature, the young children out of curiousity explore the wardrobe after being told not to have anything to do with it.

The scripture that entertwines with this book include:  Leviticus 4:1–7, 35; Matthew 27:27–55; 28:1–10; Romans 8:1–4; Ephesians 6:11–18; Hebrews 9:11–10:18

There are four different addressed points in the book that are brought forth.  These are (1) The lust for sinful pleasures leads to sin and death. Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.  The children are the sinners and end up fighting against death.  The Witch killed the Lion, similar to the crucifixtion of Christ, who shed his blood for our sins. (2) Jesus willingly died for our sins.  The Lion in the story died in place of the children just like Jesus took our place on the cross for our sins.  (3) The torn curtain of the temple symbolized that we now have access to God, along with the ability to have intimate fellowship with him.  Christ invites us to be with him, so why not take the chance?  (4) Christ’s resurrection shows God’s victory over death, gives us new life, and enables us to overcome sin.  Similar to this, the Lion rose after death and killed off the Witch and her army (the Devil)  and in doing this, he healed the dead boy and the frozen people and animals that were around.  Just like Christ does and did for us.

I just thought it was real interesting to see the similarities to the bible that this book proposed.  It was so cool.  I also recommend the movie, if anyone is interested.  It's just as good as the book, but you know how that is, the movie never beats the original book!

I read the books when I was little, and loved them. I never noticed the biblical references. I heard about them before I went and saw the movie, but didn't think much about it. Once I saw the movie-I did realize them though. I am an atheist, however, because I knew the story behind it all-it wasn't bad at all. The movie was amazing..just as the books were.

Nice post. Do you think the broken table represents the torn curtain?

Actually, C. S. Lewis didn't intentionally mean to make his characters representative of Biblical characters. He wrote the story because of an image of a faun in the forest he first had when he was sixteen, and he tried to expand on it. As a sometimes-writer, I can see where he was coming from.

I would be interested to know where you heard that...

C.S. Lewis wrote the books for his children, because he was tired of the same old fairy tales and liked to write. He wrote in biblican references because he was involved with his religion, and wanted his children to be too.

As a matter of fact, I read it in his books (I forgot which ones). He mentioned it more than a couple of times because it was a common misconception and he was tired of being seen as a Christianizer.

that's weird..because the interview I read w/ him just before the movie came out (last year?) he said that people had just picked up on his biblical references, but that he had intended it that way, but people didn't have to see it that way...

Well, stand corrected and read his books.

and who are you to think you rule the world?
I HAVE ALREADY READ THE BOOKS. AS I ALREADY STATED.
This was an interview-WITH HIM-where he stated this.

His other books, you redneck. He wrote more books than the Narnia Chronicles, y'know.

Ok. I am 100% sick to death of your bullshit. GROW UP.
"you redneck" Let's play the immaturity game! HOW MANY NAMES CAN YOU CALL ME THAT MEAN NOTHING AT ALL?
Seriously. Try growing up.
And-as I have told you MANY MANY MANY times, but your tiny little brain can't comprehend, learn the meaning of the word redneck.

everProgressive's picture

That was actually the first time I called you a redneck. If it means nothing at all, then WHY ARE YOU SCREAMING LIKE A MORON AS IF IT DID? Be open to criticism, you idiot.

Actually-no it wasn't. You have done it on other posts.
And now you call me an idiot. And a moron. How damn immature are you? Again-LET'S PLAY THE IMMATURE NAME CALLING GAME!
I'm not screaming-I was pointing it out.
Like I said before-grow up. Quit calling people names.
It's hard to believe someone with such an immature, simple mind is on the top 10 for points.
It's probably only because you go around calling people names in comments.

3 names in 2 comments. Wow. Real maturity there.

haha Me a moron. Well you must be the moron to believe that you can scream over the internet dumbass.

Hey I'd rather be a redneck then a person who believes and prolly is involved in being incest.

You totally missed the point of the blog. Once again, please improve your reading skills.

Once again. Grow up.

I wasn't posting a comment about the blog I was posting a comment in defense of my girlfriend and I. So once again you try to insult me and it really doesn't work. Graduate from 3rd grade before you talk on a website that is at a college level. Maturity, it sometimes takes people many years to achieve it.

That was just what I had heard, that it had a biblical reference. I looked it up and it all seemed to unfold, and make sense. That's the only reason for why I put this on here.

WOW! I put this blog up for a discussion about a book, not for two people to be in conflict. This is ridiculous for two people to slump so low as this to fight on a blog that was intended to talk about biblical references of a book. I can't believe this. I'm sorry that I have caused so much contriversy. But that's ok, I'll just know that if one of you end up with the scholarship money, I'll know its not from brilliance it's from ignorance

Excuse me? So, my talking about the book and then being called names is me being ignorant? I was only talking about the book until I was attacked for no reason. At which point-I told goose to grow up.

So yes, I am ignorant for trying to stick to your blog, I am ignorant for trying to inform people of the interview I read.

No, I wasnt refering to that as being ignorant, I was refering to the fighting being ignorant. I refuse to fight with anyone on a scholarship blog

I was not "fighting" I was defending myself and my boyfriend.

ok, it ends at this post
