The bond between parents and their children is strong and never weak. Nobody can come between the bond or break it. Parents know how to make us feel better, they know when we are scared and uncomfortable, they know when we are going to do something bad and sometimes we do not have to say a single thing and they understand everything. All they have to do is look at their child and they can sum up everything. They give us a sense of sercurity, happiness, a sense of belonging. No matter how angry a child gets at their parents they always need their love and advice. Without parents we are like a lost soul who is lonely and scared to move. So what happens when we are wiling to challenge that bond. Challenge it to a point where the bond may be demolished.
Where does the bond come from. It comes from parents watching their children grow up. Parents want their child to be popular, a football player, to be happy, to be a prom queen, to become a doctor, to get married and have a family but when their child does something different and surprises them, that is what the bond is based on. Parents growing with their children, whatching them change as the years pass, and being proud of what they do no matter what. They find joy in our life as we change from wanting to be superman to becomming a super model, to joining the NBA, to wanting to have a family. They are our support system but we are challenging whether parents need to be surprised anymore by what their child chooses to do or becomes. What if parents no longer have to see their child grow up because they already know the outcome.
Let us go shopping for the super baby. Everything is possible from having a boy with blue eyes, dark brown hair, and is an athlete. If you do not approve of a little boy than why not a little girl, a girl who will have a personality that will make everyone like her, she will be tall and thin, and very intelligent. She will be the perfect human. If everything works out than maybe she will marry the perfect man. No worries if she does not marry him than she can go to a clinic and make the perfect child. Father a little dull or not athletic or maybe he was not very intellgent, well everything can be fixed. Just change the genes or the DNA.
Everyday we are comming closer to understanding DNA and genes and soon we will be able to change the outcome of life. If you want to wipe out a family heart disease just come and have the perfect child. It ranges from eye color, hair color, height, weight, personality, being ahtletic and how intelligent you want them to be.
Having the world full of perfect people will not only lead to diseases being hard to find but it will defind how unique we are. Nothing will define who we are as the world will be full of perfect people. There will be no flaws, no mistakes, no sturggling with social classes.
It is not hard to imagine where rich people go out and buy technology for brainy, athletic, charming, funny, healthy children. When the rich begin to do it, those who choose to not buy a child will be seen as disabled. The children that are not perfect will be seen as a flaw where they are to fat, not smart enought or not charming. The standards will be raised all around as insurance companies will only take perfect people, education will only surivive around the perfect human being where learning is easy and not complicated, jobs will search for the perfect person for the perfect postion. If you were not created to be perfect than where will you fit in, no where. There will be a standard that you must be perfect in order to be accepted in society. The definition of a normal person will be redefind.
It may be morally wrong or may not be, it may be against mother nature but it should be something that is wrong on every circumstance. We are not doing it just to end disases it will become a hobby like golf or tennis, to have the perfect child. It will be abused and our DNA and genes will no longer be unique. We need to draw the line somewhere on genes and it is allowing people to shop for a super baby. Designer babies lead to a bond being broken and the world becomming perfect. There is no more guessing, there is no more surprises just genes that are created before a child is even born. Let's take the mystery out of life.
The only way everything can be pre-determined is if in the nature vs. nurture debate, everything is actually nature. There's a lot of evidence on both sides so I think it's some of both, and the superbabies people order won't turn out the way they're supposed to.
In one of those weird collisions of time and space, I read your blog's title at the exact moment Entertainment Tonight reported that Jamie Lynn Spears has registered at Babies -R- Us. I thought, "no way...somebody blogged about that?" Glad to see it was a wee bit more progressive than ET!
