I live in Tennessee and recently they increased the tax on cigarettes. This has caused many Tennesseans that live close to the boarders to drive out of state and buy cigarettes cheap. But, there is a law in place that if you buy more than 2 cartons of cigs out of state and cross the boarder with them; you cigs will be confiscated, you can get fined, go to jail or even get your car impounded. I think that is ludicrous. I dont see how they can takeaway your right to drive to another state to buy cigs. Many people will loose their cigarettes to the police just cause they didnt buy them in TN. I think that is crazy. I think we should change this law. I am not a smoker, but i believe they are taking away our freedom by shopping somewhere else.

What? That is ridiculous. How exactly are they going to check what state they were bought in though?
They are going to have cops on the boarder.. they have a lot of boarder stores. Cause before TN had a lottery, everyone would just go across the state line. So they will basically look at those stores, and when they see people buying lots of cartons.. they will pull them over when they get to TN

I think its for only TN residents. The point is that the TN people are not paying the TN taxes. So you shouldn't have any problems if you dont live in TN

This is crazy. The state of Tennesse doesn't have the right to punish it's citizens that go to other states to purchase cigarrettes. Just because profit on cigarrettes is deeply disliked and smoking is disliked by the gov't of Tennesse doesn't mean that they have to begin taking unconstitutional action. People could begin to sue because of the state's lack of respect for their rights.
