Everybody knows that today is Valentine's Day (AKA Single Awareness Day, a name used by my, well, single friends). I love Valentine's Day and all, but frankly, its gotten to be way too commercial. I have been told that I am being too cynical and am just bitter because I do not happen to have a Valentine, but that is not the case. If you want proof of how commercial it has come, take a look down a high school hallway. There's all the proof you need- human-sized teddy bears, dogs, etc. in pinks and reds, and balloons the size of my head proclaiming messages of love. Let's not talk about the remains of candies that litter the floorboards. All of this just makes me wonder where the true spirit of Valentine's Day is- the love aspect of the day. Can you really buy somebody's love with candy and stuffed animals and balloons? Must we succumb to the Hallmark industry? Does it matter if somebody’s teddy bear is bigger than yours? Shouldn't it be a day of love and not just gifts and chocolates? What happened to a hug or a kiss to symbolize your love for someone? And why should Valentine’s Day be the only day you show your love and affection for someone?
So how about next Valentine’s Day, when your debating about whether or not you should get the giant stuffed teddy bear over the red dog for your significant other, why don’t you consider making a homemade gift. They show that you actually took the time to make them something- even if you aren’t the craftiest person. And why don’t we make everyday Valentine’s Day? Take the time to tell at least one person a day that you love them- it’d be appreciated.
Happy Valentine’s Day ya’ll!

I agree that Valentines has got too commercial, but thats only for people who buy into it and i hope it's only the young who think it 's the size of the teddy that matters (although it's probibly not!) For me it's a day to reafirm to my nearest and dearest that i love them and that without thier encouragement and support my life would be a loneler place. I didn't buy a card or a teddy to express this, i did it in a way i like to think only i could. I hope it's the same for most people has they get older.
With life being so busy, it's just one day that say's ' stop! smell the roses, what you have here is special' .
I'll let you in on a secret- it's part of our woman scheme to get men to buy us expensive stuff like jewelry, roses, and 18-foot tall teddy bears only to have the favor returned in the form of a fake leather wallet you'll never carry and some cheap boxers that you'll never wear.
Okay, and we like the romance a little. :)
