What's in a name?

"What's in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other word would smell as sweet."
                   -William Shakespeare

So what is the value of a name?  How important is it?  While a rose might smell as sweet with a different name, would a college or a big corporation?  Everyone's heard of JP Morgan and knows that that's a solid place to come from.  But what's so separate from a job that requires just as much work if not more, but is not as prestigous?

Society will always put an emphasis on labels. Names are everything. But, it's up to each person whether or not they will allow superficial labels to play a part in their life decisions. So, no, to me a name doesn't mean much. But, unfortunately it has to mean something because it's what our world is built upon.

Yea, they put so much emphasis on things such designer labels.

We are biased individuals who have certain opinions and focuses on things. We are taught as kids to be this way and are often educated in a biased fashion. So names do have a meaning because of the way they sound to us.

A name gives us an identity. Whether we belong to any country, caste, age, I believe a name help to make me unique. Maybe I am not famous, but I sure have a tag through which people can recognize me and thats my name.

Do you mean the name that was given to me and that I am now called by? I think it's important - otherwise, what would I be referred to?

My parents named me right, oddly enough - everyone says I look like they would expect someone with my name would look - like the name fits the face >_<

As for labels in society - they're fine, just don't take them seriously. Just because everyone calls you a nerd doesn't mean anything bad, or that you need to change somehow - it just means society thinks that way.

I mean like the name of a company or a college. Does the name make it better? What Shakespeare said isn't always true because not everything agrees with that.

It does in a functional way - "What college are you going to?" "That one in that one state."

Names are very imporant. Without them, we'd be describing things just to get points across.

a name is everything in merchandise and business, but as for an indivdual persons name, i dont think it's that important, since you can change it and all..
