Poetry, can it have more than one meaning?

Poetry. Its a wonderful use of everyday language to really express one's emotions. But studying poetry in school ... can it have more than one meaning?  can you kill it but over analyzing it? English teachers in school are all about the use of language expressing our most inner thoughts through poetry. But when we are to analyze them for marks, it kinda ruins it. I mean honestly, its nice to look at what the poet is trying to get a across. But when we are told to analyze and we get our work back and getting a zero because the teacher thinks differently than us. its kinda stupid.  Everyone has a different point of view! but apparently some teachers think that only their point of view is right. And analyzing and analyzing poems just totally kills it. like, im guessing that there are many things to look at, but doing some much work on it and analyzing it to its dead is just not right. So obviously poetry can have more than one meaning, differently people think differently. Its just some people are too selfish to think that anyone else has a point of view. and yes its nice to know what is behind the poems but analyzing it one time too many totally ruins it.

Its ironic. i wrote this blog yesterday because its always been on my mind and i finally got a way to get it out there. and today, just in class we were talking about this subject. and apparently most of the other students in my class feel exactly the same way. lots of meaning. and it totally kills the poem when we over analyze it. one of my friends even mention that maybe the poet just wrote it to express some feelings, not for other people to find every single literay term in ti. he does have a good point. but in any language, we honestly shouldnt over analyze poems.

Not all classes are like that. I'm in a creative writing class at my school right now and it is really an easy going and free spirited class with a great laid back teacher. He teaches us well and I've learned a lot but we don't take any tests because he thinks that the tests would ruin the class for us. We do get grades for things like stories, poetry, our drafts, and our exercises but we need those grades to get a grade in the class. We also discuss the meanings of poems and stories in class and everyone including the teacher has an open mind to all of the views and opinions that come forward. It's a great class. I wish there were more like them out there.
