So as I was driving down the highway last night, I saw a billboard saying "Let's Get Rid of Standardized Testing." Hmm, it really made me stop and think.
I know just like all of my other peers that for 10 years I dreaded taking CSAP (my states test) and I am very stressed about ACT, but now I think that I have finally realized that this truly are necessary.
Nobody likes to wake up early and rush into a room to just take another test, but I have started to become very argumentative with those who talk so poorly about them. Yes, schools do seem to focus a lot of their time on these tests. Most people think they only care about us for the money they get from our scores, but at the same time, can't you understand?
Schools need to get funds somehow just to help us out more. It's not like the principal or the school board take the money and go on a vacation to Europe.
I dont know, I guess the more I stop to think about the more I sympathize with schools.
Somehow we all need to take the same test to rank us among eachother, granted it doesn't show everything about us, but I do indeed think that standardized test are a necessary evil.
What do you all think?

They are not evil.
but I've taken the SAT twice already. I'm gonna sign up for a thrid time then the ACT for the 1st all before my senior year and before the summer starts.
They are not evil... They just control our lives. And our future
Well yes, they are not "evil" but I just mean that they are indeed necesarry granted we definitely dislike taking them.
They are not evil, per se.
But I know that in Virginia, students have to take the SOLs. And because so much emphasis is placed on the testing, that's pretty much all the teachers teach. They don't let students learn. They just give them the information that they need to vomit back onto paper.
And I know that my community college professors all hate the SOLs. They all complain about how they make students lazy about studying.
People are people, even though people are strange.
Ha yes, indeed they are.
Teachers certainly do put a huge emphasis on the tests, but to be honest that is where it is everywhere and i really do not think that there is anything that anyone can do to change that.
You said something about schools need funding. These test do not provide any kind of financial help. I cannot understand the meaning of making children sit in desk for 3 hours straight bubbling in answers. The only thing that the state does is punish schools who do not reach the set bar.
In our school system there is testing called DEIBELS. It measures the number of words that a child can read in one minute. This starts at first grade and students who can speed read are rewarded. Why dont we reward the children who are comprehending what they are reading, not just spitting out nonsense to see who finishes first. This is just one way that I think the education system is way off target with their goals.
Our school is small, but at the same time we are the highest performing school on standardized testing in our country. Yet somehow, we are one of the least funded. Money should not hang on the abilitly of a student to outlast hours and days of these redundant tests.
I've taken the SAT twice (just took it last Saturday, as a matter of fact). From discussions with various friends and personal reflections, I don't think that the SAT is a true evalutation of how well I did in high school or how well I'm going to do in college. I find that many friends who are brilliant and who excel in their studies do poorly on the SAT and other standardized testing. I also don't like the emphasis placed on the SAT and ACT scores for college. Many colleges give scholarships based on SAT and ACT scores. That's all well and good, but what about those who've worked really hard all throughout highschool? I don't think they're fair in that way. My $0.02.
